Penguins tended to choose the object that matched the expected association: large after low-pitched sounds, and small after high-pitched sounds!
This suggests that they can use sound to guide visual choices, linking what they hear with what they see.
Can penguins link what they hear with what they see?
Our new study shows that African penguins associate low-pitched sounds with large objects, and high-pitched sounds with small ones.

We tested whether African penguins show a similar sound-size association.
After hearing either a low- or high-pitched sound, they were presented with two unfamiliar objects: one large and one small.

How does a single cuckoo species evolve eggs that mimic those of many different hosts?
In a new Science study, researchers report genomic data that reveal a complex geographic mosaic of cuckoo-host coevolution.

As a child, watching the TV movies Zorro and Lone Ranger, there were many things I didn't know about horse riding. If you feel the same way, don't miss our new article(s) exploring rhythmic locomotion in horses! Do justice to Tornado and Silver! @lia_laffi@AndreaRavignani

We faced the same issue with acoustic data of the African penguin colony in Stony Point. That's why we developed a methodology to detect wind noise using YAMNet, a pretrained CNN that already includes wind noise in its training!
The data collection phase is over, now it's time to analyze the data! Thanks to everyone involved, it's been awesome being back with the African penguins at Stony Point in South Africa! #SANCCOB#CapeNature
