Those questions are TERRIBLE! True reversals I think are relatively rare -- much more common (especially for someone you want to interview!) is to be right on trajectory but wrong on timing. So I would ask for examples of that in one's past -- and then naturally extend that to the present: what are contrarian beliefs that you had that were later vindicated? What contrarian beliefs do you have now that have not yet been vindicated?
Non sarcastic post alert.
I really enjoyed Bryan's talk here as he speaks on how systems become accreted over time. The accumulating complexity is something I've pointed out repeatedly this year as a danger to guard against especially as we scale into agentic coding delivery.
@ashleevance@HSVSphere@billylevin Introduced me to the world two decades ago with an on-the-nose metaphor that friends and family still won't let me forget!
Really loved this event with @GergelyOrosz! If you were there, can I ask your help on something small?
As often happens at these kind of events, I ended up with a pack of folks afterwards talking about various things. After we had been discharged onto the street, an early-career engineer asked me for some professional advice: he is trying to navigate in an org with crushing LLM-use mandates -- and a daily LOC expectation. And (if I heard this correctly?!) he said that they had a mandate on the order of 30K lines per day (!!).
He was asking my advice on how to improve this situation, and I think my advice wasn't too helpful (namely, that he should ally himself with like-minded engineers -- and with the finance folks who are presumably looking at a jaw-dropping AI bill).
Upon further reflection, I wish I had asked a bunch more follow-up questions about his situation, because the 30K/day is so BONKERS (also, DID I hear him correctly?!).
Is there anyone who was there who can help connect me to him? (I think I know his employer -- but only because someone said it after he left.)
Alternatively, if you are suffering under similar LLM mandates, let me know -- I'd like to be in a position to offer better advice than "this too shall pass".
DMs are open -- and thanks!
No Oxide and Friends tonight -- but if you find yourself in San Francisco this week, you might still be able to join @gergely and me on Wednesday evening for a live chat!

You may see an 81 year old man crying after waiting decades to see his favorite team win the World Series but I see a 15 year old kid living in the moment.
