A misguided decision by a cabal of few army officers to take the law into their hands and dismantle state structures throughout Tigray the last few days has plunged the region into an uncharted territory, with civilians protesting these illegal moves being rounded up and shot at at random. Many casualties in Adigudom and parts of Mekelle. The rampage is part of a harebrained plan to install an illegal faction of TPLF into the position of power, a move that flies full in the face of the aspirations of the people of Tigray and if the Pretoria Agreement. It’s incumbent upon all the stakeholders to the Pretoria agreement to face down such a brazen move before it escalates into another round of devastating war on and against the people of Tigray. There is every reason to believe external forces are trying to take advantage of this crisis to stock up more violence throughout the region and beyond. As if the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people in IDP camps is not worse enough, the very officers who only recently put themselves in harm’s way in their people’s cause. Much as it pains me to break ranks with my erstwhile comrades, it’s altogether fitting and appropriate that we condemn such reckless acts of unmitigated violence in the service of a faction hell bent on grabbing power at all costs.
Amid fragile security and deteriorating humanitarian conditions, especially in health and nutrition, the people of Irob and Zalambessa in Tigray, Ethiopia, continue to be harassed and intimidated by Eritrean forces, including to forcibly change their identities.
Lasting peace cannot be achieved until people’s basic rights are assured and they are allowed to live freely and autonomously.
👏🏽Today, we have submitted evidence to @UN_HRC regarding Gross Violations of Human Rights, War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity & Genocide in #Tigray, Ethiopia. I would like to express my gratitude to all those who contributed. It took us 3mons of hard work to gather this evidence
1st April - ❝We've met children and families who are all dealing with the conflict that happened here and the drought which is resulting in this unimaginable level of hunger here in #Tigray. We've met #children who are begging, we've met children who are working to try and earn a little bit of bread to keep them going for that day, we've met #mothers who are really worried about what the next few months and beyond might mean for their children and for their families.❞

#Ethiopia & #Eritrea are guilty of #TigrayGenocide
“Everyone must secure their area. If they witness an inappropriate movement (you have to report it). Health professionals and soldiers, who aren’t natives of this area, are stationed here for 24 hours by leaving behind their family and marriage. This is to address your health and security needs.
• It is the natives who know the spots through which enemies could sneak in. Even if an entire brigade were to be deployed here, unless you collaborate, it will not be possible to get the job done.
• Even if your brother were to come from Adigrat, regardless of the purpose of his visit, you have to report it to the concerned body. He will not get executed or harmed. He will only be investigated and dealt with in accordance with their purpose of visit.
• If you go to Adigrat to receive aid and provide confidential information but return here and when requested to provide information of what you saw there, say you haven’t seen anything, your [inaudible/allegiance?] is with the TPLF.
• There is no difference between you and us. You are Eritreans. We treat you like Eritrean people in Adi-Kuala and Senafe, particularly since the administration has been established. But you have to abide by the rules of the country.” 2/2

We call on the IC to press the #Ethiopian govt to remove the #Eritrean forces from all of #Tigray as per the Pretoria CoHA & its responsibilities under the constitution of the country.
In the case of 🇪🇹|n govt’s continued failure to protect its citizens from a foreign invading genocidal forces, we call on the IC to consider providing protection to the indigenous minority people before its complete erasure/extermination.
A shocking video clip (with English translation) ⬇️ out from the violently occupied #Irob district, Eastern Zone of #Tigray, confirms only what we already know: The #Eritrean regime is forcing a false Eritrean identity on the indigenous #Irob minority people with denial of aid & essential services & threatening them to comply with its compulsory 🇪🇷|n national military service (known as an indefinite slavery program) as they have forcibly been annexed to Eritrea. The video was filmed at a locality called #Alakalo, at Masi-Dage (junior high school) in Adgadi-Are/Edalgeda (northern subdistrict of Irob).

Here is the English translation of the video clip in Tigrinya:
“As Eritreans, you too have to support the struggle of Eritreans and the Eritrean government. We are all Eritreans; there isn’t a distinction between you and us.
• All Eritreans must know that the Eritrean government was forced into the struggle and the suffering that is being faced; it had no desire to take part in it.
• Weyane (TPLF) is an agent; it doesn’t have the strength to challenge the Eritrean government. Both in the past (Ethio-Eritrean war) and presently, it is doing the bidding of other forces which are backing it.
• The struggle of the people and government of Eritrea is also your struggle. You should be proud of it. You should understand that the Eritrean government is winning by enduring all the sanctions and challenges not against the TPLF but the world. You should be proud of it if you are Eritrean.
• One elderly man has said, “We (the people of Irob) have gotten used to unlimited democracy under the TPLF leadership. Now you are telling us that we are under your administration. But you won’t be able to tolerate our ways.” This talk is what continues to be propagated. When we tread on this land of martyrs, we tread on it softly. But what has been coming from this side (TPLF) is very much despicable. You are people. But this is Eritrean territory. If you are Eritreans, you have to defend against what comes from the other side and collaborate with the Eritrean army.
• What is being reported is that there is no one from Irob who is providing information or collaborating with the Eritrean army. We will investigate it.
• The other thing is, it is being said that the Irob, although they consider themselves as Eritreans, have disagreements with the Eritrean government regarding humanitarian aid and the national service. But if you are Eritreans, whether you like it or not, you will have to go through the things that every Eritrean experiences.
• During the armed struggle, fighters who joined the Eritrean struggle from Irob have done their national duty and been martyred. Although, during the war, the land (of Irob) may, at different times, have switched hands between Eritrea and the TPLF, you know that your children and brothers have paid sacrifices for Eritrea during the armed struggle.
• If there is anyone who believes they are Ethiopian, the Eritrean government will not force anyone to remain here. But this territory belongs to Eritrea. And Eritreans reside on Eritrean territory. And Eritreans must abide by Eritrean rule like the other (Eritrean) people. If there is famine, you should starve like everyone else. If a few grains come, then you divide it with them and live like that. There will not be any preference.
• Regarding security in particular, lawlessness has been prevailing. They come from Adigrat and spend the night here; they go from here and spend the night in Senafe. And you don’t report this to us. Unless you provide information, the social service that you have been asking will not be provided. If you defend your homeland and your area, adequate social service will be provided as it will be able to continue preserving its peace. If you don’t collaborate, however, your demands will not be addressed. So, who is going to suffer? It is you who will suffer.” 1/2👇

It has been over a year since the end of #Ethiopia’s civil war. Yet, at a time when the region should be recovering, people in #Tigray remain in crisis.
Our latest report from Dr. Sarah Miller details the humanitarian situation and recommends a way ahead.

#Ethiopia: A quarter million students face mass dropout amid unfolding drought induced starvation: #Tigray Education Bureau
https://t.co/gQgSL0AFlz
The Tigray Education Bureau issues a stark warning: over a quarter-million students face halting their education due to imminent starvation amidst the ongoing drought crisis. Expressing deep concern over the lack of aid, urgent calls are made to international and local partners for immediate intervention.
This plea coincides with the African Day of School Feeding, highlighting the vital role of homegrown feeding programs in promoting human capital development and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). From 29 February 29 to 01 March, the 9th Africa Day of School Feeding saw events emphasizing the critical link between school feeding and student survival.
Assessments from 2023 reveal 36 districts and 213 villages severely hit by drought, affecting 222,940 students across 625 schools. Out of 2.4 million anticipated enrollees, 60% face barriers like starvation and displacement. While initiatives like the one in #Yechilla_Abergele reintegrate 650 students, concerns loom over program sustainability.
Ethiopia hunger: Children leave school in Tigray to feed starving families. About 400 people are thought to have starved to death in the past six months in Ethiopia's Tigray and Amhara regions, according to the national ombudsman. https://t.co/4trBrIonqZ
#Ethiopia: Desperate Times: Students in #Tigray region desert schools amid drought-induced hunger
https://t.co/v5WgwSTWRN
A severe drought in Ethiopia's Tigray region has plunged millions into hunger, forcing students to abandon their education in desperation. Shewit Shishay, 13, was compelled to leave school in 5th grade to care for her younger sisters after their mother disappeared and their baby sister died of starvation.
While the Pretoria Peace Agreement in November 2022 brought a ray of hope, the ongoing drought continues to threaten Tigray. Regional authorities warn of imminent famine, with over 860 hunger deaths reported in the past six months.
An assessment by Tigray's interim administration found 36 drought-impacted districts where 625 schools and nearly 223,000 students are struggling. Only 40% of Tigray's 2.4 million students are currently able to attend school. Thousands are at risk of dropping out without urgent food aid and feeding programs.
The crisis has also left schools bereft of essential supplies like desks, books and writing materials. Six schools have reduced instruction to grades 1-4 only. Moreover, over 100 schools now shelter displaced persons and 522 schools remain inaccessible in contested areas.
With children's welfare and Tigray's future at stake, officials plead for assistance to establish feeding programs and provide emergency school supplies. Securing access to education could provide a lifeline for students facing unimaginable hardship. As one district official stated, without support, "a significant number of students" may have no choice but to abandon their schooling.
One in three people in northern Ethiopia are facing extreme hunger, the UK-based charity Oxfam says.
That's a total of almost 10 million people in the regions of Tigray and Amhara. https://t.co/80tAl555YU
Today, I impressed upon @SecYellen the importance of holding accountable those responsible for human rights abuses in #Tigray and sanctioning #Eritrean and Fano forces in #Ethiopia that @hrw has identified as having committed mass atrocities.
