Today, it was #GlobalGateway🇪🇺 day at #VillaEuropa🇪🇺 in Rome. The Commission‘s Erica Gerretsen @EU_Partnerships briefed the UN Ambassadors of the 27 EU Memberships and of the African Union about the new approach of the EU to international development cooperation and to strategically working together with the private sector. We are currently rolling out Global Gateway projects with our partners across the world, and we will also do this increasingly at the Rome-based UN Organisations @FAO and @IFAD.
Today, we celebrated #EuropeDay#GiornatadellEuropa at #VillaEuropa🇪🇺 in Rome, with the many diplomats from the diplomatic corps to the Holy See @TerzaLoggia🇻🇦, the Sovereign Order of Malta @orderofmalta, the UN🇺🇳 in Rome @FAO@WFP@IFAD and the Republic of San Marino @AffariEsteriSMR🇸🇲. We recalled the work of Robert Schuman who inspires us until today in our work for peace, transborder cooperation and solidarity between nations and continents. We underlined our unwavering solidarity with Ukraine @AndriiYurash@VKhymynets 🇪🇺🇺🇦. The state of the world is challenging. But the European Union and its friends continue to work for the rule of law, multilateralism, free and fair trade and an effective UN system. Thanks a lot to @IFADPresident Alvaro Lario🇪🇸, @WFP Executive Board President Carla Barroso Carneiro🇧🇷, @maumartina🇮🇹, @ICCROM_DG@ArunaGujral 🇮🇹, @AntonellaSberna🇮🇹 and @RaffaeleFitto🇮🇹 for having encouraged us today to believe in Europe, in the rules-based international system and in the work for global public goods, notably food security.
The 🇪🇺EU believes in #multilateralism, with the 🇺🇳UN at its heart. It is often challenging to find common solutions with 193 or more partners, whether in New York, Geneva, Vienna or Rome. But common rules, global standards and cross-regional initiatives are still the best answer to global challenges. At the UN in Rome, at @FAO, @WFP and @IFAD, the EU and its 27 Member States work together for multilateral solutions to strengthen global food security and to fight against hunger in the world - next Tuesday at a special session of the @FAO Council dedicated to the implications for world food security and agriculture arising from disruptions of supply chains in the Gulf region, including the closure of key maritime routes.
Energy shocks have exposed our farmers to rising input costs and uncertainty.
We must accelerate the shift to homegrown solutions, scaling biogas, biomethane & biofuels. To strenghten our energy independence and support farm incomes.
🇪🇺 deal 🇦🇺
Trade policy is about balance: creating opportunities for our exporters while protecting their interests & our food production.
That balance is at the core of this agreement.

Today at the 🇺🇳UN‘s @FAO in Rome, the Group of Friends on Bioeconomy co-chaired by 🇪🇺&🇧🇷 had a global, a regional and a national vision on its agenda: We discussed the G20 High-Level Principles on Bioeconomy agreed under Brazil‘s presidency, the EU‘s new Bioeconomy Strategy presented by @blaga_v, and 🇲🇾Malaysia‘s National Policy presented by Wan Hasnul Nadzrin of the Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation. Knowledge, Nature and Value Creation are the three pillars of the international work on the bioeconomy. At @FAO, we will continue to work with all regions on robust, coherent and converging policy frameworks that foster sustainable trade for bioeconomy products and services. Thanks to all Ambassadors and experts from all regions for your active participation in this important process!

Bioeconomy is much more than you think.
You may have eaten with a corn fork, but did you know that nail polish can be produced from algae?
The EU's upcoming #Bioeconomy Strategy is a strategy for economy growth without damaging nature.

Many countries in the world are currently working on new or updated Bioeconomy Strategies to give farmers a new economic lifeline, to strengthen circularity and to promote sustainable agrifood systems. The bioeconomy is an important theme for multilateral cooperation - to ensure progressive convergence of best practices and standards and to support cross-border trade. This is why this week, the 🇪🇺EU and 🇧🇷Brazil launched, at the 🇺🇳UN’s @FAO in Rome, a new “Group of Friends” 🤝 on the Bioconomy. Earlier this year, EU Commissioners @CHansenEU@EUAgri and @JessikaRoswall@EU_ENV had underlined the importance of international cooperation on the bioeconomy in discussions with the management of @FAO. I am very glad to co-preside the new “Group of Friends” together with my great colleague Carla Barroso Carneiro, Brazil’s committed Ambassador to the UN in Rome, as a sign of our joint commitment to the rules-based international system @eu_eeas@EU_Partnerships. We are privileged that several countries from all continents already expressed their interest to join our group. Thanks a lot in particular to @childp_child, Deputy Director-General of the @EU_Commission’s DG Environment, and to Brazil’s National Secretary of Bioeconomy, Carina Pimenta, for their inspiring words on the forthcoming Bioeconomy Strategies of the EU and of Brazil. And to @FAO’s knowledgable @KavehZahedi2030 for the important work of his team on data, principles, projects and best practices.

#IPCC's 2022 #ClimateReport shows heatwaves in Europe will become more frequent, more intense & will last longer.
By 2050, about half of the European population may be exposed to high or very high risk of heat stress during summer.

The team of @eudeleg_rome just had a very useful preparatory meeting with the excellent team of the incoming Danish presidency of the EU Council of Ministers @eu2025dk🇪🇺🇩🇰, which will start on 1 July. Together, we will do our best to give #TeamEurope🇪🇺 a strong, united and effective voice at the three 🇺🇳UN Organisations in Rome, @FAO, @WFP & @IFAD. Making @FAO fit for purpose, using its expertise to promote sustainable agrifood systems and working with partners across the globe on the bioeconomy are among our priorities for the next six months in Rome #Multilateralism #UN80 #FoodSecurity #SDG
Today at the Conference of @FAO🇺🇳 in Rome, together with my colleagues Ambassadors from Brazil Carla Barroso Carneiro and from Germany @AndreasvBrandt we 🇪🇺🇧🇷🇩🇪 hosted a side event on the strategic importance of the #bioeconomy. From biofertilisers from plant residue via bags from fish skin to cosmetics based on natural ingredients: When managed sustainably, respecting the environment and local communities, the bioeconomy can provide immense value to farmers, fishers, foresters and all stakeholders in the value chain. International cooperation on the bioeconomy, including at @FAO, has a lot of potential to open up new sustainable trading possibilities. The 🇪🇺EU’s forthcoming new Bioeconomy Strategy of @JessikaRoswall & @CHansenEU is very important in this context. Thanks a lot to 🇩🇪State Secretary @BreherSilvia, 🇧🇷National Secretary Moisés Savian, 🇮🇳Ambassador @VaniRao1 and @yurdi_yasmi from @FAO for your inspiring interventions! @EUAgri@EU_ENV

The 🇪🇺European Union‘s Commissioner for Agriculture & Food @CHansenEU is for the first time at @FAO🇺🇳 in Rome today. In challenging geopolitical times and right before the start of a crucial @FAO Conference, he met @FAODG QU Dongyu to underline the EU‘s commitment to the UN system and to the rules-based international order, our interest in common rules & standards in the field of sustainable agrifood systems and the importance of the bioeconomy. The EU is and remains a reliable & predictable, but also demanding partner of @FAO.
