@TECleveland @cremieuxrecueil Despite some bogus grants, a lot of government is like this cartoon. I bet this "small team" would find a line item for "screwworm sterilization" and delete it, not knowing that they just devastated American farming: https://t.co/OAnAkxDSEK
@patchdj@UChicago@UofOklahoma I got a Master's in philosophy and that was enough for me to recognize that a life in academia was a pretty much the worst way to have an impact on the world.
(Teaching can be rewarding and impactful, of course, but if that was my path it's a hell of a lot easier to go to HS.)
@patchdj Why not both?
We should have both.
Honestly, if we don't have both better public transport (more routes, more hours) AND plentiful autonomous rideshares. I don't care if it's Waymo or someone else (public or private) so long as it's safe.
I know people don't like the business model of Lyft/Uber but every time I'm in a US taxi I am *stunned* at how bad the experience is, from top to bottom.
It's been over a decade and they've learned nothing, despite the competitive pressure.
There is, particularly, a moral dimension on “We will be able to make first-pass cognition available at a price point so low it is historically unachievable for any quantum of effort from a professional.”
1. Driver doesn't know where he's going
2. Music is too loud.
3. He's rude.
4. Smells like smoke
5. Price is ludicrous.
Waymo (or better public transport options) can't come fast enough.
@snewmanpv@David_Kasten Also *inevitably* we are going to discover the downside of maximally candid automatically recorded persistent record of what senior technologists believed about their orders and actions via an indictment at some point.
I don't want to let DD off the hook here but to me this is just such an obvious failure of the regulatory state / our Congress failing to pass laws.
This is not a hard thing to regulate and not a terribly hard thing for gig economy platforms to comply with.
I heard doordash was stealing tips from their drivers so out of curiosity, I asked the woman who dropped off my tacos how much it's showing that I tipped her; she said $5. I showed her my phone where I tipped $20 (bc the taco place was busy and she waited for my order). 😐
@patchdj For the record, you should check the citations of your overeager meat space interns too!!! Again, you're accountable for work your name is on!
@patchdj Wild people are complaining about this. Check your citations, bruh. You're accountable for work your name is on.
I use LLMs all the time for research. They're overeager interns with no common sense/faulty recollection. Super helpful but if you blindly trust them you're mad.
Should you pay the equivalent of a sandwich in property taxes to support the Oregon Historical Society (measure 26-261)?
A good question! Here's my analysis: https://t.co/ZlkmlZTC4u
@motorhueso@patchdj The water thing is almost entirely fake though. It's just folks not understanding big numbers or water use in light industry or agriculture.
It's wild people keep focusing on it when there are actual, real harms of data centers (like air pollution, which is really bad!)
