UPDATE: Niihau and Kauai are now expected to experience Category 1 hurricane force winds…(70-90 mph) with gusts of up to 130 mph…
Infrastructure here is not like that of the Gulf Coast where those buildings are designed for repeated tropical systems with high winds. The wind damage will look worse here than it would in Florida or surrounding areas for a Cat 1.
If you live on any of the western islands you need to be hunkering down NOW.
Stay safe Hawaii

Hurricane Lowell is inching farther east towards Hawaii with ever forecast.
Right now the NHC has the center predicted to be roughly 100 miles offshore from Kauai. This will bring tropical storm force winds around 2 p.m. with hurricane force winds staying just offshore.
As for rain, at least 10-12” is expected for all 4 islands. However, Kauai could receive up to 16”. This WILL lead to significant flooding and landslides.
Have numerous ways of communication, and seek a safe area when the flooding begins.
Again, winds will not be as significant as they would be near the center, but 50-70 mph is likely.
