@gabbyn2219 This is a great infographic that shows how deep this issue of period poverty goes. This problem is global; lack of access to products and education can be damaging for young women. Menstruating is a natural process that women should not be ostracized for experiencing #WGST106
@MaryFrancisWGST I agree. Educating children on safe sex should not be a topic that parents shy away from. Withholding this info from young people can put them at risk. Also, puberty is a transformative process that children should feel safe and secure experiencing, talking is important #WGST106
Racism is a social determinant of health and has affected quality of life and health outcomes for Black women. Racial trauma is real and has strong psychological effects. Slavery may be “dead” but its memory is detrimental and has contributed to black maternal mortality #WGST106
In the US, Black women die from pregnancy-related complications at a much higher rate than others. The majority of these deaths are preventable, introducing tough questions for health care. PhD candidate Kyle Nisbeth explores maternal mortality

Many ppl are unaware of their patient rights which is important due to high rates of Black maternal mortality. Doctors do not fully communicate w/ their Black patients leaving them vulnerable. The system will not protect them but tools like this can provide more insight #WGST106
This is such a common idea that I have heard some of my friends buy into as well :/. I have never understood why women are unable to be free with their sexual desires without being scrutinized. This is extremely unfair and women should not have to feel this pressure !#WGST106
Men who have sex with multiple women are praised amongst their friends, whereas women are seen as "dirty" and "impure" (Perryman et al.). The harmful slut-shaming culture that this language perpetuates shames women into behaving and suppressing their sexuality.
It is important that women are represented in STEM especially in academia because this can encourage other young women to pursue this field. A lack of representation can add to the stigma that women are not “built” for jobs in STEM. Professors can be very influential! #WGST106
Women are underrepresented and there are so many issues with women being professors, which is leads to there being less women STEM professors than men. There are only 29% of women that are STEM professors.

@Juliaadoyl I agree! Investing in women is important and people do not realize the significant impact that this could have on this issue. People should be enraged to hear that across the board women generally make less than men who hold the same job! Equality should be the priority. #WGST106
@Daman51ngh The pressure society puts on women is very disappointing. Women are just as capable at succeeding as men and should not be deterred from jobs in STEM! However, due to these gender stereotypes, there are more hurdles women have to jump through for a seat at the table. #WGST106
Even after death, their bodies were used as cadavers in white medical schools. Blackness became medicalized which fueled beliefs that Black bodies are inferior. Many physicians today treat their Black patients worse due to these subconscious beliefs.#WGST106#theeffectsofslavery
In the US, Black pregnant women are at a high risk for maternal mortality and morbidity. In an article written by Dr. Elizabeth Howell in 2018, “Black woman had a case fatality rate 2.4 to 3.3x higher than that of white women for 5 specific pregnancy complications”. #WGST106
How did these disparities even come to be? The history of enslavement of African Americans in this country is one of the major reasons. According to an article by Owens et al. in 2019, through slavery, the bodies of Black women were commodified as child bearers. #WGST106
@gabbyn2219 Amazing! We need to take women’s health more seriously. Menstrual products can be extremely expensive and people should not have to worry about paying for these items considering periods are a natural process with only few options to control them. #freethetampons&pads #WGST106
This article is a great example of how deep the roots of medical racism go; Black bodies have been mistreated for too long. Scientific racism was considered beneficial to white individuals because it further progressed the ideas of white supremacy. #protectblackbodies#WGST106
As I said to Olympian @AllysonFelix at our White House Maternal Health Summit, tackling this maternal health crisis starts with providing access to high-quality care for all women.
Time for some serious girl power! We're pumped to announce 14 new recipients of our Power of She Fund: Child Care Grants in partnership with @allysonfelix and @Athleta! These grants are awarded to elite mom-athletes to help with child care costs, so they can focus on training.
@BaltimoreFund @sem_camille Our country’s insurance system is flawed and many are left without options when it comes to medical care. It’s great to see organizations like this giving access to services that are hard to obtain for financial reasons. Everyone deserves the right to medical care ! #WGST106
@hoconnell2024 This situation is incredibly frightening because many are unaware of how horrible the effects will be. Access to procedures like abortions can be lifesaving to some. If this is overturned, it will only further the racial disparities that we see in maternal health. #WGST106
Friday night. Reviewing some literature bc I’m just in the mood to do so. And this piece by Dr. @mclemoremr is one of my all-time favorite works ever. Read it and you’ll understand why. https://t.co/SkcZu3WI7F
@Daman51ngh I definitely think this change should be applied to men’s bathrooms. There are many fathers who are the sole caregiver to their child or who split the responsibility with their spouse. They should have equal accessibility to changing tables. This stigma needs to be broken #WGST106
