I can’t stress enough that this would mean the complete extinction of human culture. You need art because it connects you to all who’ve gone before you; it challenges you to embrace perspectives not your own. Media generated to your exact preferences is the death of the soul.
I cannot see the future going any other way. We see it now with silicon EDA. It will only propagate until we are post-human-interpretable on every front; engineering and beyond.
What happens when a single day of AI research produces more mathematics than humanity can absorb in a century?
Imagine millions of superhuman research agents at work. Formal systems may verify the proofs, but humans won’t have enough context to understand the underlying web of machine-invented concepts.
Mathematics could split into two layers:
Machine mathematics: vast, verified, mostly consumed by AIs.
Human mathematics: a compressed “effective theory” of the machine frontier—the small subset of ideas we can understand.
Physics may follow the same path: AIs could explore huge spaces of theories and derive correct predictions using structures no human physicist fully understands.
The key question is whether AI can compress knowledge as fast as it creates it.
My guess: the detailed frontier becomes permanently machine-native, while selected parts are periodically compressed into human-comprehensible principles.
Eventually even deciding what is worth understanding may require AI.
At that point AI is no longer just a scientific tool. Humans are receiving selected explanations from a much larger intellectual civilization they cannot independently grasp.
the apple reference photo is likely one of the most consequential things that apple is shipping
watermarking AI gen content is a futile endeavor -- the smarter thing to do is to watermark real things instead
@RomainHedouin what are you talking about? PMSM motor control is AC and will forever be more efficient than DC motors… the cybercab is only removing a single existing AC-DC converter while adding a new one for wireless charging… so far from “purely DC”
@Ethan92745839@KeremJanberk EV1 mentioned! They did a whole lot of revolutionary stuff with that car. Modern EV platforms (at least outside of China lol…) are still not all that different from what the EV1 pioneered!
I think the difficulty is that one isn’t really only addicted to the telephone so much as addicted to never having an unoccupied moment, as the telephone is just the little apparatus by which this is achieved. Should you remove Twitter, you’ll open YouTube, then remove that and you’ll read the news, but remove that and then you’re interested in the weather in Belgium and so on.
The rather more horrible experiment these days is probably to just sit somewhere for an hour or so with nothing whatsoever to do with no book or music, or any such improving activity smuggled in…
I believe one shall discover very quickly what the telephone has been protecting one from
{I say all this, naturally, whilst writing it upon the telephone I have been staring at for a stupid portion of the morning}
The shittiest thing about AI as a SWE is that while it's not the 10x nitro-boost that all the AI hypebeast grifters on here claim it is, it *is* a net ~30% productivity gain (once you factor in all the review, code slop clean up, etc.), which is *just* enough of a boost where you cannot justify not using it.
This is a letdown because using AI after years of learning to code without it is of course an ongoing humiliation ritual, (counterintuitively) *more* exhausting/draining than coding by hand, and way less enjoyable in general.
@GoddenThomas now do it with SLS for improved tolerances! at home you could probably improve them with nylon filament, it’s much stiffer (and stronger and much more expensive) than PLA
@willdepue GPT-2 345M wrote a handful of sentences in some of my APUSH essays back in 2019. It was never factual but came up with some truly creative writing given enough attempts.
I miss those models.. they could do some unbelievable shit when they weren’t acting like dementia patients.
@GuiveAssadi I will never forget how excited I was to finally test out the full 1.2B version after having my mind blown 124M. But really, GPT-2 was only a bit more coherent than a dementia patient…. and that was not that long ago.
@MehdiHacks It’s not cheap ($450) but this is the best bang for your buck. It’s an extremely capable 3lb robot kit with lots of room for upgrades if you want to turn it into a hobby. Not the best choice if you just want something fun for a few days though. https://t.co/qYwQwEG2td
