Frankly, I don’t see how President Zelensky can still dismiss Fedorov after these protests and appoint Ihor Klymenko to solve Ukraine’s mobilization problem.

Ukraine’s mobilization crisis is not fundamentally a manpower problem. It is a trust problem.

No democratic country can mobilize effectively without a functioning social contract between the state and society. People will make extraordinary sacrifices only if they trust the institutions asking them to do so.

Fedorov was one of the few officials giving people hope that this social contract could be rebuilt. His battlefield assessment raised difficult but necessary questions about what wasn’t working and how to fix it.

If, after all these protests and everything revealed by that assessment, the response is simply to replace him with someone the public does not trust, mobilization will not improve. It will become even harder.

Trust cannot be imposed. It has to be earned.

I still hope it is not too late for this crisis to end with wiser decisions rather than deeper divisions.

To really understand how Russia thinks today at the negotiation table, we need to go a bit back in time. Enter Andrei Gromyko, the Soviet diplomat known as "Mr. Nyet" he wasn’t just being stubborn he had a method. He literally said about the West that it is "impatient, divided, and always pushing for quick results," and that Moscow could use this to its advantage. His repeated vetoes at the UN weren’t arbitrary they were lessons in pressure, patience, and leverage, Every concession the West offered, he pushed for more, asking relentlessly, step by step, until the other side gave more than they expected.

The idea was simple: the West wants action fast, results yesterday. Moscow doesn’t. Delay, test, observe and let your counterpart expose its divisions. Gromyko built a doctrine around exploiting Western weaknesses: if they push too hard, you stand firm; if they compromise too quickly, you extract more. He saw the West as fragmented and inconsistent, and he treated negotiations as a zero-sum game where time itself is a weapon.

Look at Europe or the U.S. today: divided on everything, arguing internally, chasing short-term optics. Moscow sees the same patterns, and the strategy hasn’t changed much. When Russia negotiates, it’s not about compromise first it’s about waiting, observing, and letting the other side make mistakes.

So, to understand Russian policies now, whether in Europe, the UN, or with global powers, remember Gromyko’s approach: patience over haste, leverage over agreement, and exploiting divisions over rushing deals. The history is old, but the method is very much alive, meanwhile we have too agree nowadays with Gromyko’s views.
