CBDT issues Circular No. 07/2026 dated 28.09.2026 extending timelines for filing various reports of audit and Income Tax Returns for Assessment Year 2026-27.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the due date of furnishing of Return of Income for Assessment Year 2026-27 in the case of persons mentioned at S. No. 2 in the Table below Explanation 2 to sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 from 31st October, 2026 to 21st November, 2026.

Accordingly, the 'specified date' for furnishing of the report of audit under the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961 for Assessment Year 2026-27, in the case of such persons, stands extended to 21st October, 2026

The current situation is deeply concerning and calls for greater sensitivity from the Government and the CBDT. While government departments may follow established timelines, taxpayers and tax professionals are facing significant practical difficulties, immense workload, and genuine compliance-related pressure.
Good governance is not merely about enforcing deadlines; it is also about understanding genuine hardships and responding to them in a timely and considerate manner. Taxpayers and professionals should not have to repeatedly appeal for reasonable time when practical difficulties are clearly evident.
The Government and CBDT should demonstrate sensitivity and announce the extension of the Tax Audit Due Date to 30 October 2026 without any further delay. An early intimation today would provide much-needed clarity, reduce unnecessary anxiety, and strengthen public confidence in the Government and the tax administration.
I sincerely hope that the CBDT will take a positive and considerate decision and bring this much-awaited good news today.
