@CatImperator Are we sure it was looted in 1204? I've seen theories that it was brought to Italy earlier, and then for some reason it was brought to Barletta. Btw according to locals, it represents Heraclius, although this is seen as unlikely by historians
We’re proud to announce that journalists Habib Battah (@habib_b) & Christina Cavalcanti (@cavalcantich), & editor Annia Ciezadlo (@annia), won The National Press Club’s (@PressClubDC) 2026 Arthur E. Very sad to learn that Mona Khalil died after weeks in the ICU following an Israeli strike that levelled her home in Mansouri. She was a very well-known environmental activist and dedicated her life to saving endangered turtles. She stayed in the south despite Israeli strikes because of her love for the land.
She was a civilian, a renowned figure but Israel targeted her house.
CNN profiled her in 2017 here: https://t.co/ZaMRnuS4zf
“I live every day to the fullest and don’t worry about tomorrow,” she told the newspaper.
Mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna
Theodoric, the king of the Ostrogoths and ruler of Italy, was interred at this mausoleum when he died in 526. It was built outside the city walls of Ravenna, the last capital of the Western Roman Empire.
When did the Roman Empire actually fall? In AD 476? Or in 410? Or a millennium later in 1453? Or, if you apply stricter criteria, did the (Western) Roman Empire actually fall on a completely different date in the 5th century? On why 468 *really* matters: https://t.co/WOBBlIKjZg

He and her, together in eternity
Whoever says late Roman art declined, you must show them this - the imperial mosaics in San Vitale, unequaled beauty, an extraordinary delight.
And if you still haven't, you must visit Ravenna
Ottoman and Byzantine studies don't talk to each other too much but it's interesting that some of the biggest books in both fields attempt to reframe politics in both Empires as something less like an oriental despotism and more like a Republic.
