Ministers and civil servants spent €1.8 million requesting higher air fares at taxpayers' expense despite being expected to travel economy as standard

The luxury seats were initially booked in September last year for Martin Heydon, the agriculture minister, and two of his staff, at a cost of €20,501.

However, the department cancelled these flights without securing a refund and booked new seats for Noel Grealish, an independent cabinet minister, and two of his staff at a further cost of €31,791. This brought the total spend to €52,292.
