🌍 Eight years of the Protocol: stronger cooperation against illicit tobacco trade
Today, 25 September, marks 8 years of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. 🎉
With 73 Parties, the Protocol continues to strengthen international cooperation to prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute illicit trade in tobacco products. 🤝🚨
Illicit tobacco trade does not stop at borders. Tackling it requires collective action across countries and sectors — from customs and tax authorities to police and law enforcement. 🌐
🔎 Eight years on, we remain committed to:
✅ Strengthening cooperation and information sharing
✅ Sharing expertise and good practices
✅ Improving investigation and prosecution
✅ Supporting effective implementation of the Protocol
More Parties. Stronger implementation. Greater international cooperation. Together, we can strengthen the global response to the evolving illicit tobacco market. 💪🌍

#InternationalDayOfCharity may be over, but the need to protect public-interest spaces from tobacco-industry influence remains.
#Bangladesh provides an important example of moving from recognizing the problem to closing the loophole.
Previously, its #tobaccocontrol law restricted tobacco companies from using their names, trademarks or symbols in CSR activities. But this still left room for programs operating without obvious tobacco branding.
In December 2025, Bangladesh went further. Its amended law prohibits not only tobacco branding in CSR, but also tobacco-company assistance to organizations, events and programs— addressing the underlying activity, not simply how it is presented.
It is an important reminder that denormalizing tobacco-industry CSR requires more than limiting its visibility.
Effective safeguards must also address the pathways through which such activities can create access, legitimacy and influence.

The tobacco industry wants you to believe their products have “evolved.” New colours, new devices, new flavours—same deadly consequences. The rebrand is a distraction from decades of harm. Do not fall for it. #UnmaskTheTacticsKE
It's #WorldAIDSDay, and it's crucial to highlight the intersection of #HIV and tobacco use.
Did you know? The excess mortality rate among smokers living with #HIV is, on average, three times higher than that of the general population. If tobacco use is fully avoided, overall #HIV mortality could be reduced by up to one-quarter.
Implementing the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is key to addressing both #HIV and #AIDS. 🚭 Evidence-based policies under this framework can integrate tobacco cessation services into existing HIV care, ultimately saving lives and helping governments move closer to the goal of #EndAIDS.

Youth advocates and a group of NGOs from around the world gathered at the Broken Chair monument in Geneva to call for strong action on the tobacco industry on the eve of #COP11.
Their message was clear: protect our future, safeguard children, and keep the tobacco industry out of health policy. The tobacco industry is preparing to spin, distract, and delay, and these advocates say: our health is not for sale. #FCTCSavesLives
