Travel back in time 114 years to the summer of 1912. This imposing figure is named Kopeli, the Chief of the Snake Clan Priests at the Hopi Snake Dance Ceremony in the Pueblo of Walpi, Arizona.
I have cleaned-up this stunning photo by Franklin Price Knott which was taken in 1912 but not published by the National Geographic until 1916. it was taken using an early colour glass-plate process and isn't colourised.
A friend was in the Secret Service. He did the advance for Bush's 1985 trip to China. In Guangzhou, the MSS had installed a listening station on the floor directly above Bush's room. He found it two days before Bush arrived and was FURIOUS with the Chinese. They had no idea how he found it and were super embarrassed. Partly as a result, Bush had a Marine helicopter escort from Guangzhou to Hong Kong - the first time US forces had been on Chinese soil since World War 2.
@London_W4 Went to Woodbridge in February to see the Saxon ship they are building there - well worth a visit. Also, I got a very nice coffee from the red van in the background of the picture of the sailboat.
True story..remember those Hwy401 rest stops, looking somewhat like a landed UFO?
They were designed by a Toronto architect by the name of Harry B. Kohl. Kohl was one of the premiere architects of the 1960s/70s.
After graduating from University of Toronto in 1947 Kohl designed a number of homes, the 401 rest stops, and the Millhaven Maximum Security Penitentiary that opened in 1971.
The astronauts. Their ride around the Moon.
The Artemis II astronauts pose for a group photo after viewing their Orion spacecraft — which they named Integrity — in the well deck of USS John P. Murtha following their splashdown.
I’m delighted by the elegant, efficient origami art of an unfolded box. Purposeful design and technology that we take for granted, yet enabling so many things. And it looks like a robot.
1/x So what can the number on a shipping container tell us? We call this whole sequence the BIC Code (Bureau International des Containers). The BIC code has been adopted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1972.
Old Land Rover and The Yorkshire Dales. There are few things as pleasant as chugging along an unmade track in Yorkshire in an old Land Rover. I’m not saying they’re the most comfortable things, mind you.
In case you ever wondered what the underside of Tower Bridge looks like. Photographed from the beach at Shad Thames. One of my favourite locations in London. When you descend the steps from the street to the beach, you leave the noise, the hustle and bustle of the city behind and stand there in your own world for as long as you like. Well, until the tide comes in.
Watching a tv documentary on Himmler, a German priest was curious about the details. IIdly combing the internet for more information, he came across an image of Himmler’s mistress and did a double take. The woman not only bore an uncanny resemblance to his grandmother, but also shared the same dates of birth and death.
Over several months of amateur genealogical research, Lenkeit, 48, confirmed that Himmler had been his grandfather.
“I was completely shocked,” he told Der Spiegel, which first reported on the story. “Am I really that guy’s grandson?”
