I’m free.

On November 2nd, I was convicted of felony conspiracy for organizing a hundred nonviolent activists to give medical care to sick and dying animals at a Whole Foods factory farm. After public outcry and seething media criticism of the court’s actions, I was unexpectedly released today. Now, I’ll have a kale salad and tofu — after 107 straight meals of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I’ll see the sun and the sky, and plants — marvelous plants! — after endless nights in a concrete cage. And, most important, I’ll renew my promise to Oliver, whose bond with me was forged by fire and steel. I can’t wait to hold my little guy in my arms and say again, “We’re together forever! A pack once again!”

But, in truth, this fight has just begun. While I am free, the animals are not. And the movement is at an inflection point: what we do in the next few months could change the course of history — no exaggeration. For that reason, it is crucial that we understand the challenges to come. Here are five of the most crucial (plus a sixth, personal challenge, for readers curious about what comes next for me).

- Establishing animal personhood
- Winning the right to rescue
- Rebuilding a movement on the frontlines
- Shining a light on disinformation
- Defending against efforts to bankrupt the movement
- Rebuilding a personal life
