'Unbelievably, government has no idea how many are in hospital receiving education, nor how many are unable to access their mainstream school due to illness. Worse, it has no means of finding out even if it tried'

@missm_teachess@cbukhelp have some really good resources and advice line. Also @goodgrieftrust You could also try your local hospice - some run bereavement listening services for their communities, regardless of whether there is a link to the hospice. I hope you find what you are looking for x
@DrHelenDrury@kennygfrederick Discriminates against pupils whose physical needs mean they struggle to produce neat handwriting however hard they try (CP, spinal cord injury, etc). Yes, they may use a laptop later on or be offered alternative but why create a barrier that need not be there?
@JanPaine@SwailesRuth Utterly heartbreaking. Total lack of understanding of hospital teaching on the part of the inspector, not to mention a lack of humanity
@missdcox Another plus- as a hospital teacher, it’s so helpful when schools use PowerPoint & share them with us for the students we teach, so we can cover as much of what they’re missing as poss. Shared work on other platforms is often much trickier to access.
@MrC_PrimaryEdu I’m not sure where it comes from but ‘every interaction is an intervention’ is a useful reminder that those short conversations can help build trust, which is fundamental. As the adults we need to be the calm, safe space for pupils who are struggling with emotional regulation.
Can you help us? In Feb 1976, the first Winter Paralympics were held in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. 196 athletes took part – but there's no record of what the medals looked like. If you know someone who competed please email [email protected] ♥ @Paralympics@wheelpower
@ChildrensComm I am hospital teacher - if 100% school attendance was realistic, I’d be redundant. Children get ill - sometimes very ill. Please stop and think about the impact this messaging has on children & families who are already going through tough times, and engage with the actual issues.
@guardiannews If we are serious about addressing the rise in anxiety & mental health problems amongst young people, we could start by changing the emotive & negative language used around GCSEs that helps no one: ‘flood’ ‘fail’ ‘tougher’ ‘resit’
@ChildrensComm Speak to hospital & home tuition services. Meet children& families w. chronic health conditions, illness, injuries & in mental health crises, who our services have the privilege of working with. Aiming for 100% attendance is ableist not ambitious & not the only route to success!
@Rachel_deSouza 2/2 high-stakes 1-size-fits-all exam system w. failure built in, effects of poverty/deprivation on health etc. Engage w. families & professionls who work in this area. Also don’t assume 100% attendnce is essential for success- it’s a damaging narrative to unpick if chldrn get ill
@Rachel_deSouza 1/2 Many issues surrounding attendance have been building for years pre pandemic - Covid has just heightened and highlighted them. Please use this as an opportunity to look at the underlying issues - school environments that are not inclusive, lack of appropriate SEND provision
@KJF239 I use @wakelet to gather topic-based collections of useful websites, videos, pdf etc, either just for me or you can make them shareable on Teams etc.
