There is much to be said about the lack of community and support women have today when it comes to raising children. There used to be more extended family to help, and society used to be more child-friendly
But the reality is that men do substantially more than past generations to carry the weight of child / housecare, and many women have nannies / daycare - yet they still seem unable to cope with childrearing. Even women who wants larger families find it hard
I don't think the reason for this or women's "mental load" actually material so much as cultural.
Objectively, women have it easier than ever before.
But psychologically it's harder, because being a mother has been framed culturally as a sacrifice.
The ideal girl life is going to brunch, traveling, being hot, enjoying an easy indulgent life with a cushy job.
Every woman who decides to get married and have children is thus not doing what is cool, or fulfilling the ideal life for a woman, but is instead making a sacrifice.
And because women derive so much of their identity from the culture at large, this is why many of them resent their husbands regardless of how involved they are
A feminist culture leads to subconscious feminist resentments even in ostensibly non-feminist women
No wonder so many marriages are falling apart, because it takes men with remarkably strong frames to neutralize this subliminal messaging in their wives, and it takes women with enough character to stay committed to their marriage and families regardless of the sisterhood's seductions
Bottom line though - until culture begins to glamorize motherhood and disparage "girl boss" life, there are going to be upstream pressures against family formation
Why it is so important women who are showing off their superficial lifestyle aren't elevated in status but mocked
These women are losers - the female equivalent of a fat cheeto dusted gamers who refuse to live for anything but their own immediate gratification
They are useless to society, and should be treated as such
If the Great Replacement isn’t happening and is just a ‘neo-Nazi conspiracy theory’, then surely you have no problem with us putting forward legislation to prevent it from ever happening?
If it’s fake, there should be no reason to oppose legislation that prevents it.
@Dan_Jeffries1 Somehow allowing people to talk to a model that's too big is a threat so great that we have to crash the economy to stop it but allowing a teenager to drive a Hummer is not. Absurd.
@SpencerFernando Who would make up that population of 100 million? Many would support allowing 60 million culturally compatible people to come but that's not who we're getting.
For open source AI to win, we need to build out these areas:
> Decentralized inference/ML
> Open source dataset repos & data alignment
> RL/SFT/Post-training
> World model research
> Physical AI & robotics
> Agent loops & harnesses
> And a bunch of other fields
We need tons of experts across the board.
We can't just rely on open-weight models that could get closed off at any moment.
What we really need is a rallying point.
Top-tier researchers like @karpathy should have been leading projects like this instead of joining Anthropic.
Open source must win.
@MikePMoffatt The only way this can make any economic sense is if they use the units for social housing.
And that's not what he said.
But at least Carney is correctly identifying the problem: that we need far more housing for young families.
The biggest scam in Canada is that if you move a romantic partner into your house
their income reduces ALL OF your government benefits (usually to 0$)
but, if you move in your brother, uncle, grandmother, cousin Sayeed, and auntie Gupta
you can ALL go on welfare together.
@TheRobertRock@MarcNixon24@grok@grok explain how deadweight loss from high taxes on building results in fewer homes being built. Make an estimate of how many more homes there would be in Canada if there were no taxes or fees on new housing
if you can hold 3 jobs, hit a few perfect trades, keep expenses low and then nail that parlay you can live the lifestyle of a moderately successful plumber in the 1970s
