Many of us in the Internet community are mourning the loss of Alan Barrett. For more than three decades, Alan played a foundational role in shaping the Internet in Africa and beyond.
He helped establish the first connection to universities in South Africa, co-founded the countryβs first commercial Internet service provider, became one of the key architects behind AFRINIC, and participated in various groups, councils, and boards.
But beyond the titles and accomplishments, many will remember Alan for the thoughtful, reliable, and dedicated person he was. Rest in peace. https://t.co/9uL3bglxoM
As UK policymakers attempt to address online harms through interventions like access bans and age restrictions, they risk fragmenting the web, weakening privacy, and creating barriers to access and participation.
Thatβs why we joined a coalition of organizations calling for thoughtful, evidence-based approaches that address online harms while preserving privacy, interoperability, user agency, and the open Internet.

@TragedyCalls@ClemCowton Efficiency was not my thought here , we are paying wind farms to turn off , surly thatβs the ultimate inefficiency, we can already use natural gas , hydrogen infra needs to be developed
@TragedyCalls@ClemCowton Thatβs the idea , but the gas grid may not extend to all areas that renewable sources are , but transportation of gas is no issue
Maybe pair with small gas turbine on site and storage for peak times / low wind
@ClemCowton Has octopus looked into using natural gas generators during peak times (eg terraform industries) in future? Can be placed near the sources and use existing gas infrastructure
currently they are working on bringing the price down but we could use those instead of turning off wind
@llvmnoir @Steele_LOL @lukOlejnik The list was somewhere that you as a domain owner could submit your domain to be included in the browsers list that will always have hsts enabled , useful when hsts started but as they say most browsers default to https these days anyway
@llvmnoir @Steele_LOL @lukOlejnik it looks like due to most browsers upgrading the connection by default - preload is not recommended anymore - text on the link I sent in previous msg
@llvmnoir @Steele_LOL @lukOlejnik I also wondered about mail clients - they should throw up a cert error but most users will click ignore :/
the first connection case is only when the domain is not in the preload list (for browsers) https://t.co/V7uCLT7cMa
