The trending role in AI startups isn't AI engineers—it's Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs). Several top AI companies I know are hiring FDEs en masse. This role is now surpassing "PM" as the coveted position for technical generalists.

What's an FDE? They're software engineers who work directly with customers to implement and customize software to meet specific needs. This role is surging in popularity because:
1. Enterprise customers are buying AI solutions but lack expertise to implement them. Legacy systems remain a major hurdle.
2. Even today's sophisticated AI can't autonomously navigate complex enterprise workflows and requirements and integrations.

Here's what's fascinating: This isn't actually a new role - it's the evolution of the "Solutions Engineer" or "Accenture/Deloitte Consultant." But by rebranding it as FDE (taking a page from Palantir's playbook), AI startups have created an exciting career path for technical talent who want deep customer interaction. Previously, many such friends would have coveted a PM role instead.

The ability to translate between business requirements and code has always been important. I think it will only become more important over time.

What they get at (the need for annoying last-10%-mile customization) is an ubiquitous thing that is currently taken advantage of by COTS vendors via change requests.
