The US military spends over $60B each year on new aircraft, the single largest asset category in defense. There are more aircraft types with billion-dollar buys – 9 in 2025 – than any other type of asset, e.g. naval vessels, munitions, and space assets.

But individual aircraft cost has become a barrier to traditional air superiority. America’s most exquisite fighters and bombers cost many hundreds of millions of dollars each. A single platform can now represent a significant share of the annual procurement budget.
