Every once in a while I'm reminded that dnsmasq, a lightweight DNS and DHCP server that's bundled into *almost every IOT thing and Linux distro*, is a hobby project maintained by one guy in the UK named Simon.
Nobody pays him and he doesn't get near the thanks he deserves.
@danluu You should move to the cloud because it gives you capabilities you can't build on your own. If you're growth minded, the cloud gives you options for the future. If you are "small" and have a problem that's completely solved on-prem, moving to the cloud may be a bad call.
@danluu Engagement with cloud services is usually better viewed on a maturity scale and an organization will likely change how it uses technology as a shift to opex over capex degrades barriers to change.
@GergelyOrosz Peloton has a design docs culture that has swung back and forth between centralized to decentralized over time. We've taken up ADRs in the last year that focus on "decisions" with "design docs" usually being longer form, often supplementing an ADR.
Something that can seem harmless but becomes problematic for any company: executives perceived as “checked-out”. The higher level this happens, the more problematic.
It not only gives permission for people in their org to follow but it starts gossips that often do more damage.
5 things I've learned the hard way about multi-region / multi-cloud:
1. Building your own control plane, whether cross-region or cross-cloud, involves cost and complexity that you will have to deal with every day - not just when a managed service has downtime.
Folks, my next Pay What You Can SOC class starts March 28th.
Many of you are in the security space. If you can pass the class on to someone you know who needs to get past the gates of infosec, I would appreciate it.

Help spread the word.
It's happening. @UnderdogDevs will be providing stipends to a select group of mentees so that they dont have to work while they learn software development.
If any of you know of a bootcamp that would like to work with us and support our mission have them reach out.
Hey @rootlyhq@quentinrousseau do you mind explaining why your documentation has copied ours word for word? (Left: Us, Right: Rootly).
You've copied us for a while now, but at this point you're stealing from us, and that's not ok.
...and then I try to find people who don't know about it then frantically tell them not to google anything about it and just buy a plane ticket and go.
I have something I need to get done at 9am and I've literally cleaned out every possible old email, cleaned up two side projects, and it's now ~3:15AM. Guess it's time to start on that thing. Like an adult or something.
