There is a common confusion among people dealing with ulcers, heartburn, or acid reflux…..
Many of them think that omeprazole and antacids do the same thing, so anyone can go….
But that’s not how it works.
Let me explain below
Truly , they are both linked to stomach acid, but they work in completely different ways.
Understanding that difference can explain why some people keep struggling with symptoms despite taking medication.
Come with me 👇
➡️OMEPRAZOLE
Omeprazole belongs to a group of medicines that reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces.
Rather than dealing with acid that is already present, it works deeper within the stomach to lower acid production.
Because of how it works, it is generally associated with longer-term control of acid-related conditions rather than immediate symptomatic relief.
➡️ ANTACIDS
On the other hand, antacids work differently.
Instead of reducing acid production, they help neutralize some of the acid that is already in the stomach.
This is why they are known for providing quicker but shorter relief from symptoms like heartburn or indigestion.
➡️WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE ?
A simple way to remember the difference is that:
Omeprazole helps reduce acid production.
Antacids help neutralize existing acid.
Although both are related to stomach acid, they are not interchangeable.
➡️WHY THE CLARITY MATTERS
Many people assume that if two medicines are connected to stomach acid, they can be used in exactly the same way.
That misunderstanding can lead to ongoing symptoms, repeated discomfort, and delayed improvement.
In some cases, people continue taking products that are not addressing the actual reason for their symptoms.
➡️CONSEQUENCES OF USING THE WRONG MEDICINE
-Symptoms may keep coming back despite repeated treatment.
-Temporary relief may be mistaken for actual healing.
-The underlying condition may remain unaddressed.
-People may become frustrated because they feel better for a short time, only for the discomfort to return.
-In some cases, recovery may take longer than expected.
➡️WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?
A common reason is that many people focus only on the symptom they feel at that moment rather than understanding what is causing it.
Another reason is the assumption that all medicines used for stomach acid problems work the same way.
➡️WHAT TO DO INSTEAD?
-Pay attention to whether symptoms are occasional or keep recurring.
-Avoid assuming that every burning sensation, stomach pain, or heartburn episode has the same cause.
-Learn the difference between medicines that reduce acid production and those that neutralize existing acid.
-Seek professional advice if symptoms are persistent, severe, or keep returning.

FG FLAGS OFF NATIONWIDE DISTRIBUTION OF ATLS AMBULANCES, TRICYCLES TO STRENGTHEN EMERGENCY CARE
Riyom, Plateau State | 31 August 2026
The Federal Government has commenced the nationwide distribution of Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) ambulances and tricycle ambulances to strengthen emergency medical response, improve patient referrals and extend timely care to rural and hard-to-reach communities.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ms. Daju Kachollom S., mni, disclosed this on Monday at the flag-off ceremony held at the National Trauma Centre, Riyom, Plateau State.
She said the intervention would address transportation and last-mile access challenges, particularly in communities where difficult terrain and distance can delay access to lifesaving care. “Distance should not determine whether a life is saved,” Kachollom said, noting that timely emergency transportation is critical in maternal and newborn emergencies, childhood illnesses, road crashes and other trauma cases.
She explained that the intervention forms part of the Federal Government’s effort to establish a coordinated emergency medical service nationwide, with the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) providing the framework for linking emergency response, transportation and referral services.
In Plateau State, the intervention will complement existing systems, including the State Ambulance System, the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) emergency-care pathway and the Rural Emergency Service and Maternal Transport (RESMAT) initiative, supported by the SAVEMAMA Digital RESMAT platform.
Daju also announced that Riyom General Hospital had been approved as an outpost of JUTH, following collaboration with the Plateau State Government. She urged beneficiaries to ensure proper deployment, maintenance, staffing and monitoring of the emergency assets. “The Federal Government has made its contribution, and we expect the State Government to complement this investment through appropriate budgetary commitments and contributory funding to strengthen and sustain emergency medical services across Plateau State,” she said.
She stressed that the success of the programme would be measured not by the number of vehicles distributed, but by lives saved and preventable deaths and disabilities reduced.
As part of her visit to Plateau State, the Permanent Secretary also visited the Snakebite Treatment Centre, Zamko, a rural outpost of JUTH, where she announced Federal Government support for the management of snakebite, a neglected tropical disease that continues to affect rural communities, particularly farmers.
She announced the donation of antivenoms to the Centre and said efforts were underway to incorporate snakebite management into NEMSAS and the social health insurance scheme, with the aim of improving access to treatment and reducing the financial burden on affected families.
Daju said strengthening emergency and specialised services in underserved communities reflects the Ministry’s mandate to save lives, reduce physical and financial pain, and produce health for all, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII).
The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, represented by the Deputy Governor, Josephine Piyo, commended President Tinubu and the Federal Government for the intervention, assuring that the ambulances would be properly deployed, responsibly utilised and maintained.
The Chief Medical Director, JUTH, reported that approximately 1,115 patients had been transported in Jos East and more than 900 in Riyom under the emergency transport initiative, describing the intervention as significant to efforts to reduce maternal mortality and strengthen emergency care.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare reaffirmed its commitment to expanding equitable access to emergency and

In Week 32 of 2026, Nigeria recorded decreased Lassa fever activity, then subsequently an increase in the figures in week 33 of 2026.
In Week 32, a total of 140 new suspected cases were reported, along with 4 new confirmed cases and 1 new confirmed death.
In Week 33, 151 new suspected cases, 14 confirmed cases and 2 confirmed deaths were recorded, with cases reported across 23 states and 117 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
While the number of confirmed cases seems to fluctuate, the continued detection of cases and deaths reinforces the need for constant vigilance, early detection and prompt response.
Everyone has a role to play in preventing Lassa fever.
Protect yourself and prevent Lassa fever by:

A stroke is a serious medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced. Without enough oxygen and nutrients, brain cells begin to die within minutes.
𝐀 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞:
Stroke has been recognized for thousands of years. In ancient times, people believed it was caused by supernatural forces because it happened suddenly, leaving people unable to move or speak.
Around 400 BC, the Greek physician Hippocrates described this condition and called it "𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐲," meaning "struck down by violence." Although he did not know the exact cause, he recognized that the illness occurred suddenly.
Centuries later, doctors discovered that strokes occur because of problems with the blood vessels supplying the brain. This breakthrough transformed stroke from a mysterious illness into a well-understood medical condition that could be prevented and treated.
Today, modern brain scans, emergency clot-removal procedures, clot-dissolving medicines, and rehabilitation have dramatically improved survival and recovery.
𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞:
1. Ischemic Stroke (Most Common)
About 85% of strokes are ischemic. They occur when a blood clot blocks an artery that supplies blood to the brain.
2. Hemorrhagic Stroke
This occurs when a weakened blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing bleeding in or around the brain. Uncontrolled high blood pressure is one of the leading causes.
3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
Also called a mini-stroke, this is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. Symptoms disappear within minutes or hours, but it is a major warning sign that a more severe stroke could happen soon.
𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤?
Anyone can have a stroke, but the risk is higher in people with:
• High blood pressure (the biggest risk factor)
• Diabetes
• High cholesterol
• Heart disease
• Smoking
• Excessive alcohol intake
• Obesity
• Lack of physical activity
• Older age
• Family history of stroke
𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬:
Stroke symptoms usually appear suddenly:
🧠 Weakness or numbness on one side of the body.
🧠 Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.
🧠 Sudden confusion.
🧠 Loss of balance or coordination.
🧠 Severe headache with no obvious cause.
🧠 Sudden vision problems.
🧠 Dizziness or difficulty walking.

𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭:
Treatment depends on the type of stroke.
For ischemic stroke, clot-dissolving medicines or minimally invasive clot-removal procedures may restore blood flow if treatment begins quickly.
For hemorrhagic stroke, treatment aims to stop the bleeding, reduce pressure inside the brain, and may involve surgery.
Recovery often includes physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation.
𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐁𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝?
Yes. Many strokes are preventable by:
✅ Controlled blood pressure.
✅ Manage diabetes and cholesterol.
✅ Exercise regularly.
✅ Eat a healthy diet.
✅ Stop smoking.
✅ Limit alcohol intake.
✅ Maintain a healthy weight.
✅ Take medications as prescribed.
