The telecommunications company said the trial marks a significant step towards integrating satellite connectivity into Ireland's emergency communications infrastructure, providing an additional layer of resilience when traditional mobile networks are disrupted.

The test was carried out under a Memorandum of Understanding between Vodafone Ireland and the OGCIO, with the aim of strengthening mission-critical communications (MCx) for frontline emergency responders.

Representatives from Vodafone Ireland and the OGCIO successfully placed a group call to David Lund, Coordinator of the European Union Critical Communications Service (EUCCS) in the UK, demonstrating how satellite connectivity can support voice and broadband data services when conventional mobile coverage is unavailable.

The company said the technology has the potential to help maintain access to 999 and 112 emergency services, regardless of mobile provider, while also supporting communications for Gardaí, fire services and ambulance personnel during emergencies.

Clare Island has become a key testing location for Vodafone's satellite programme, having also hosted Ireland's first mobile video call via satellite earlier this year.

The island's challenging terrain provides an ideal environment to test communications technologies designed for rural areas and critical national infrastructure.

The latest trial forms part of Vodafone Ireland's wider investment in digital infrastructure.
The live demonstration took place on Clare Island, Co Mayo, where Vodafone completed what it described as Europe's first satellite-enabled mission-critical group call using a standard smartphone.

The trial, part of an ongoing collaboration between Vodafone and the OGCIO on mission-critical communications (MCx), included a successful live test call on Clare Island, County Mayo, Ireland. Conducted in partnership with Satellite Connect Europe (the Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile joint venture company), the trial connected to AST SpaceMobile’s satellite constellation, showing how satellite connectivity on a standard smartphone could support voice and data services for frontline responders when traditional coverage is unavailable.

The satellite-enabled MCx call was made by representatives of Vodafone and OGCIO to David Lund, Coordinator of the European Union Critical Communications Service (EUCCS) in the UK. This marks a significant milestone for Ireland, as well as for the evolution of emergency communications across Europe.

Clare Island has played a central role in Vodafone Ireland’s satellite testing programme, including Ireland’s first mobile video call via satellite earlier this year. Its rugged terrain and specular cliffs attract walkers and wildlife enthusiasts making it an ideal real-world environment for testing technologies designed to support tourism, rural communities and critical national infrastructure.

The $2.9B Spectrum Shift: T-Mobile, Grain, and AST SpaceMobile.

Backstory: T-Mobile is selling its 800 MHz low-band spectrum to private equity firm Grain Management for $2.9 billion. Announced in early 2025, the close has dragged on for over a year due to FCC reviews & Senate pushback over Grain requesting a 12-year deployment extension. It is now expected to close in mid-2026.

Problem: The FCC enforces strict "use-it-or-lose-it" rules. Building cell towers to protect the licenses is slow & expensive for Grain, triggering the regulatory delay.

Solution: Grain petitioned the FCC to deploy this spectrum via satellite Direct-to-Device (D2D) networks. AST SpaceMobile backed the request to help bypass ground build-out hurdles.

Once the deal closes, Grain is expected to lease the spectrum to ASTS:

Grain satisfies FCC population coverage rules instantly from space.

ASTS combines with AT&T & Verizon assets to create a 7MHz x 7MHz low-band superhighway, boosting network capacity.
