HER2 mutations in #lungcancer are more diverse than the term “HER2 exon 20 insertions” suggests.
🆕 editorial in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology argues that describing HER2 mutations more precisely, inclu where they occur within the gene, could better reflect their biology and, as evidence grows, help guide treatment decisions.
The authors also suggest moving away from using “HER2 exon 20 insertions” as a catch-all term for HER2-mutant NSCLC.

3 AUGUST 1974 – THE SYSKLIPOS MASSACRE🚨
On this day 52 years ago, Turkish invading troops and irregulars entered the house of my relatives in the village of Sysklipos, Kyrenia. Fifteen mainly elderly Greek Cypriot civilians who had gathered there for safety were systematically massacred.
Among the dead were my 22 year-old relative Andreas and his father Evgenios. Andreas was beheaded, his father was executed with a bullet to the back of the head.
While the killings were taking place, Andreas’s 12 year-old sister was being raped continuously by the Turkish soldiers guarding the house. She was forced to walk past the bodies of her brother and father and is the only known survivor of that house.
This is not “conflict” and certainly not a “peace operation” as Turkey calls it, this is the deliberate slaughter and sexual torture of civilians by the Turkish army.
To this day, Turkey still illegally occupies 37% of the Republic of Cyprus in open violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions that demanded the immediate withdrawal of all Turkish troops.
Turkey faces no real consequences, no serious sanctions, no accountability for the massacres, the rapes, the missing persons or the ongoing occupation. The international community continues to treat the aggressor with business as usual.
This is what unpunished barbarism looks like. This barbarism will never be forgotten by those who lived it. We will never forget it either.

🦠 Programmable bacteria as cancer immunotherapy? A fascinating new study in STM
👏 Congratulations to Mathieu Rouanne, Nicholas Arpaia, & colleagues.
🔬 Engineered E. coli Nissle delivering CXCL13 directly into the bladder:
• Recruited & organized B- and T-cell immunity
• Induced tumor-specific antibodies
• Synergized with PD-1 blockade
• Produced durable tumor control and long-term survival in preclinical bladder cancer models
A compelling example of how synthetic biology could reshape the tumor immune microenvironment and expand the cancer immunotherapy toolbox.

#OTD in 1974, Turkey invaded #Cyprus. 52 yrs later:
1000s of Turkish troops occupy 37% of Cyprus.
Why?
1000s of settlers from Turkey live in Turkish-occupied Cyprus.
Why?
1000s of Greek Cypriots remain ethnically cleansed from their homes in Turkish-occupied Cyprus.
Why?
The Turkish Occupation of Cyprus Will End. Ankara Can Still Choose the Manner, Not the Outcome.
On 20 July 1974, Turkey invaded the Republic of Cyprus.
Fifty two years later, it still occupies more than a third of the sovereign territory of a European Union member state.
This date is no longer Nicosia’s and Athens’ alone. It is also Jerusalem’s.
The occupied north is Turkey’s military bridgehead in the Eastern Mediterranean: around 40,000 troops, armour, artillery, rocket forces, air defence, armed drones, ammunition, depots, ports, airfields, command and logistics.
It coerces Cyprus, flanks Greece and threatens Israel’s maritime lifelines, strategic depth and critical infrastructure.
The Turkish occupation is an Israeli security matter.
Poseidon’s Wrath fused Cyprus into Israel’s defence map.
It is the contingency doctrine under which Jerusalem, Athens and Nicosia define the occupied north, Turkish maritime coercion, Ankara’s Hamas infrastructure and threats to their seas, airspace and critical assets as one theatre.
France completes this Eastern Mediterranean centre.
Any Turkish activation of the occupied north against Cyprus, Greece or Israel will confront the power of all four states.
Ankara’s hourglass is running.
Its last controlled exit is negotiated withdrawal.
Turkey withdraws all troops and materiel to Anatolia: every tank, armoured vehicle, artillery piece, rocket system, air defence battery, drone, munition, depot and command installation leaves the island.
Cyprus reunites under the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus, the only state on the island recognised by the United Nations.
The colonisation ends. Those transferred from Anatolia to entrench partition return, subject only to narrowly defined humanitarian exceptions.
Turkish Cypriots remain citizens of the Republic.
Foreign guarantees, occupation forces and unilateral intervention rights terminate.
If Ankara rejects withdrawal by agreement, it chooses removal by force.
The consequences will extend far beyond Cyprus.
Israel will commit the full spectrum of its power. Greece will defend Cyprus and Europe’s southeastern frontier. France will enter as the fourth power of the Eastern Mediterranean centre.
Cyprus will invoke Article 42(7), obliging European Union member states to provide aid and assistance by all means in their power.
NATO cannot invoke Article 5 to defend a war Turkey creates over occupied Cypriot territory.
For fifty two years, Ankara converted delay into permanence. Poseidon’s Wrath has turned that permanence into a countdown.
The science of human aging is flourishing, perhaps best exemplified by remarkable advances in organ and cellular clocks, tracked from proteins in the blood. These clocks tell us about the pace of aging within an individual and are linked to healthspan, longevity, and diseases.

🫁 PD-L1 Negative NSCLC.
In a real-world cohort of 457 patients, nivolumab + ipilimumab + chemotherapy was associated with longer OS than pembrolizumab + chemotherapy in PD-L1 TPS <1% tumors:
• Median OS: 47.4 vs 16.6 months
• HR 0.50 (p=0.007)
No OS difference was observed in PD-L1 TPS ≥1%.
