@ForestryLS your forest management plans describe the old growth Sitka spruce of Mackenzie’s Grove as “treasured.” Clear-felling is underway close by, will adequate buffer areas and large trees be retained for succession and wind protection?

First outing with #arborealforest and #forestscanner, lidar based dbh measurements on phone! Both seem to be working well on a rainy Argyll day, much quicker than tapes, calipers. Thanks @ShinichiTatsumi

@isawthewood Yes, lots of tall stands not on the main walk and also other interesting things like phoenix trees can be found. Are there any other old Sitka stands you know of around Argyll worth a visit?

Fantastic 1st rotation stand of Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, Norway spruce and European larch by Loch Awe. Hard to get line of sight for laser measurement but one tree around 62m, must be tallest spruce on FLS estate?

Despite being partially clearfelled, this thinned stand of Douglas fir/Sitka spruce/Scots pine planted 1945 at Strathyre is still a nice place to visit. Lots of regeneration (Sitka, beech, birch, rowan) in its infancy...main canopy trees > 40m

Rainy day at Inverawe among thinned Sitka spruce and Japanese larch, one Sitka around 41m in 50 years, no need to avoid arrows today.

@ForestryComm Sitka spruce from Glenbranter p1926?...those are 1m calipers for scale. There are some stands at Craigvinean forest that reached the same height (50-55m) despite being planted 20 years later! Hopefully some of those giants will survive for future generations to appreciate :)
