As usual, all the usual caveats apply and will be listed at the bottom of the post.
1) The new Panasonic 2170 cell is expected to have 40% faster charging speeds.
I wasn't provided detail about whether that means from, for example, 0-100% or like 10-80%.
Furthermore, the charging speed would of course also be dependent on the power of the Supercharger.
However, on that note...
2) There are internal campaigns within Tesla to look at upgrading the V2 (150kW) Supercharger cabinets and posts.
The goal is to put everything in a box with instructions and ship them out to contractors.
To be clear, the campaigns are LOOKING at upgrading the V2 Superchargers. Nothing has been greenlit yet.
So, in my view, we shouldn't expect to see anything this year, or maybe even next year. 2027?
3) Back to the details on the Panasonic 2170:
a) Tesla is working on getting these new 2170s into production with Panasonic at Giga Nevada by next fall.
Given that there are always delays with all things battery-related, I'm hoping we'll see these in vehicles sometime in 2027.
That would align nicely if they upgrade the V2 Superchargers in 2027 as well.
b) The carbon nanotubes mentioned in the post below will be used in both the cathode and anode.
This will help with charging speed by improving conductivity and also help slightly with energy density because nanotubes take up less space than the typical carbon black used to provide conductivity in the cathode and anode.
c) The cell is expected to be 19.2 Wh. It's not clear whether that's nominal or useable energy density.
The current 2170 has 18.6 Wh nominal and 17.6 usable.
That is, we can expect an energy density increase of between 3-9%.
If this cell is geared for faster charging speeds, my inclination would be to expect the 3% energy density/range improvement.
I would be VERY surprised if they were able to get a 40% charging speed boost and 9% more energy density/range.
d) The cell is expected to have longer cycle life. No specifics on how much longer. I'd guess an incremental improvement, like 100-200 cycles, which won't be noticeable to most people.
e) It's going to use an NCMA formula. That should slightly reduce cobalt usage and help improve the cycle life mentioned in d).
f) The cells will cost Tesla the same as the current cells.
CAVEATS!
1) These are leaks/rumors, which means they should be taken with a grain of salt.
However, the source has proven to be reliable so far and no information that the person has given me to date is been disproven.
And, none of what I mentioned above is 'out there.' It's all things that can reasonably be expected.
The 2170 is VERY overdue for an upgrade and the technologies listed above are on most battery makers roadmaps. And, the V2 Superchargers are long in the tooth/outdated.
2) Both the 2170 cell improvements and supercharger upgrades are likely at least a year away. A lot can change within a year at Tesla!
The cell upgrades will be particularly difficult. The last time they upgraded the cells at Giga Nevada, they ran into issues and delays.
My first post in 6 months just to say that I’ve heard Chamath has an extremely bullish position on $TSLA. (I’m not sure if this means leveraged or derivatives, but he’s a gambler).
