Two weeks ago we launched our major @ClimateInstitut report The Big Switch. Today, I wanted to follow up with a thread unpacking our specific findings on the costs of the energy transition - and its implications for electricity rates https://t.co/JxCNgRf5s3
Tomorrow @ClimateInstit will launch our major report The Big Switch: Powering Canada's Net Zero Future. The report summarizes two technical reports: *what* it means to align electricity systems with net zero (pathways) and *how* to do it (policy)
Climate activists are sometimes depicted as dangerous radicals.
But the truly dangerous radicals are the countries that are increasing the production of fossil fuels.
Investing in new fossil fuels infrastructure is moral and economic madness.
Today the @IPCC_CH Working Group III released its latest #IPCCReport, the product of a massive global effort to synthesize latest research and modelling on what's needed to reduce emissions to meet climate goals. It's released every 6-7 years.
A 🧵and takeaways for Canada:
Transforming Canadian electricity systems to align with a net zero future is no small task. Fortunately, Canada is not alone in this transition. Jurisdictions around the world are grappling with similar challenges & questions.
ICYMI - last week @ClimateChoices released four scoping papers for our new electricity project (final report due Spring '22). Check them out at https://t.co/NVsxjoKh70 and sign up for our webinar with the four authors, Nov 3, 3-4pm EST https://t.co/4SfYiRuvW1
📣@Climatechoices is undertaking a project on aligning Canada’s electricity systems with net zero, coming Spring 2022. As part of this work, we’ve commissioned a series of scoping papers on the technical dimensions of the transition. https://t.co/E3HqfEraHj
Saturday read ☕ "Canada's infrastructure isn't prepared for the climate crisis. [...] These risks are leaving Canadians under water, physically and financially, threatening our future well-being and prosperity." Via @ClimateChoices

Wow, I love this idea! I've been informally trying to make this happen at my child's school. It would be much more helpful if the city of MTL considered developing a walking school bus.
When you meet someone upset about a policy under the current administration (vaccines, immigration, etc), consider why they feel the system isn’t working for them. Anger & frustration often have roots deeper than that single issue.
Make it a conversation that starts w empathy.
NEW REPORT!📄 Canada's infrastructure isn't prepared for climate change. Our roads and buildings must be able to withstand current and future climate and extreme weather, or we risk disruption, lost lives & billions of dollars in damage. https://t.co/XsB5lhRlor
Foreign policy matters: After 20 years of U.S. effort, the loss of 2,448 soldiers and a trillion spent, Afghanistan was left with a corrupt government and an ineffectual military. At this moment, we must do everything we can to evacuate our allies and open our doors to refugees.
The new IPCC report reinforces the urgency of the climate crisis. Policy and decision-makers must act NOW. Every action we take will make a difference. Either to worsen or lessen the already devastating impacts. https://t.co/vXjqNkyLoZ
"A climate justice movement has emerged to position climate change as a civil rights issue with human rights implications": Read Dr @ingrid_waldron's new case study and blog addressing the intersection of environmental justice and climate policy. https://t.co/U1gwKe0cRO
Here is a new article I wrote for the Canadian Institute for Climate Choices that examines the link between environmental racism, climate change, and the structural determinants of health @climatechoices https://t.co/R0JLi98GnM
More than 117 active wildfires in Ontario today. Our skies are real hazy.
Would love to see more media coverage on this. So scared for our planet right now. #ClimateCrisis#ClimateActionNow
