The port city has been expanding significantly in its peripheries and along the Palayamkottai Road (Tirunelveli), the erstwhile Great Cotton Road which eventually heads to Madurai, and in the arc between them.

A lot of industrial units (like the International Furniture Park etc), logistical buildings, and residential areas have come up. These are likely to follow up with more growth in residential areas and tertiary sector businesses.

There are various low-lying areas to the immediate south, north, and around Korampallam areas where planning have to kick in some regulations to prevent environmental issues in the future.
