If you don’t like Bitcoin Core 30+ OP_RETURN / data-carrier relay defaults, you do not need drama.

You have options.

Old-style relay policy:

datacarrier=1
datacarriersize=83

This still relays small OP_RETURN transactions, similar to the older Bitcoin Core policy, but rejects the newer larger data-carrier default.

Stricter policy:

datacarrier=0

This tells your node not to accept OP_RETURN / data-carrier transactions into your mempool, and not to relay them.

Important nuance:

This is local mempool and relay policy.

Not consensus.

If miners include those transactions in valid blocks, your node still accepts the blocks.

That is Bitcoin.

Nodes verify consensus.
Nodes also choose their own relay policy.
