🌍 Advancing People-Centered Justice in Africa ⚖️
This week, the African Alliance for People-Centered Justice (#AAPCJ) and Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies at @nyucic, together with partners @ACE_Africa @GrassrootsJN @InnoJustice @IDLO @OpenSociety @tdh_org @UNDP @UNDPAfrica @UNDP_TheGambia and 🇸🇱 Sierra Leone, convened the African Regional Forum on People-Centered Justice in Banjul, The Gambia 🇬🇲, and online.
The Forum brought together participants from across Africa and beyond—policymakers, civil society leaders, legal practitioners, researchers, and community representatives—for a day of dialogue, learning, and collaboration. Together, they made the forum not just an event, but a movement in action to close the justice gap and strengthen trust in justice systems.
The Forum marked two significant milestones:
📘 Launch of the Africa Regional Report on People-Centered Justice, offering new insights and evidence to inform policy and practice.
🗣️ Hon. Rémy Ngoy Lumbu, Commissioner of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (@achpr_cadhp), announced his commitment to champion a resolution on people-centered justice at the next ACHPR session.
Together, these milestones reflect Africa’s growing leadership and commitment to ensuring justice systems serve everyone, especially those too often left behind, and to transforming the promise of people-centered justice into lasting change.

🧨 For the first time ever, the African Alliance for People-Centered Justice (#AAPCJ) and the Ibero-American Alliance for Access to Justice (#IBA) came together for an inter-regional dialogue on how a comprehensive and people-centered justice approach not only ensures that justice serves individuals—but also reinforces trust in institutions, strengthens social cohesion and becomes a fundamental pillar for democratic stability.
Here are some memorable moments from conversation, moderated by Pathfinders’ Laura Ospina + @TMahleka 🗣️
⚖️ “Justice systems are deeply rooted in local cultures, histories, and legal traditions. A regional alliance is one step closer to understanding and addressing the specific needs, challenges, and aspirations of the people, allowing for more tailored solutions.” —Akingbolahan Adeniran
📌@RevaiMakanje, Global Lead, Rule of Law Justice and Security, @UNDP, highlighted the importance of recognizing that the legal systems are complex, and acknowledging the diversity and complexity of the different legal systems across the regions. She also raises that there is an opportunity for the AAPCJ to strengthen and work with the African human rights system.
🛠️ “Let’s build strategies with [people], not just for them. The community has the power to lead, and [we need to] listen respectfully.” —Florencia Abed Dickson, Co-director, @ACIJargentina
🛣️ “Public policies have their impact, but the impact of having a regulation is more long-term. [A normative] framework has longer-lasting effects.”
—@marcofandi, General Coordinator, @ComjibOficial
💸 Hon. @sesayalpha, Attorney General & Minister of Justice, #SierraLeone, connected investing in #PeopleCenteredJustice to countries’ medium-term development plans, along with the need for data-driven evidence to make the connections between investment in #AccessToJustice and people-centered justice to services that the government provides to the country.
🧰 “The IBA’s impact is often not initially visible, because they are not short-terms results, but structural impacts. It is about creating conditions, frameworks, and consensus that will enable practices to be transformed.” —@mfrodriguezok, Senior Fellow at @nyucic; Lead, Technical Secretariat, Ibero-American Alliance on Access to Justice
