TIGRIAN DIASPORA PROTESTS AT U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT, DEMAND ACTION ON DISPLACED RETURN & PRETORIA AGREEMENT IMPLEMENTATION
Washington, D.C. | July 9, 2025 — Members of the Tigrian diaspora rallied today in front of the U.S. State Department @StateDept , demanding urgent international pressure on the Ethiopian federal government to fully implement the Pretoria Peace Agreement and facilitate the safe return of displaced Tigrians before the upcoming rainy season.
Chanting “Enough is Enough!” and waving banners that read “Justice for Tigray” and “Let the Displaced Go Home”, demonstrators condemned what they described as the federal government’s ongoing “deliberate ignorance” and failure to act on key peace provisions, including the resettlement of tens of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) from their home and land in western tigray .
Protest organizers emphasized the urgency of the matter, warning that further delays in the return process could leave thousands exposed to worsening humanitarian conditions as the rainy season approaches.
“The time for delay is over. We are here to say clearly that Tigrians deserve peace, dignity, and the right to return to their homes,” said one of the lead organizers, speaking through a megaphone to the gathered crowd.
A formal letter addressed to Secretary of State Marco rubio @SecRubio was hand-delivered to the State Department, urging the U.S. to uphold its diplomatic responsibilities by pressing for the enforcement of the Pretoria Agreement. The letter also called for robust monitoring of human rights violations and unrestricted humanitarian access to Tigray.
“We believe the U.S. has a moral and strategic obligation to ensure that peace agreements are not only signed but honored,” read part of the letter. “Tigray’s displaced population cannot wait any longer.”
This marks the latest in a series of diaspora-led demonstrations pushing for accountability and international involvement in Ethiopia’s post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation process. Protesters say they will continue their mobilization until tangible actions are taken.

📌 Lesson?
Infra without accountability = Disaster.
👉 Collapse ≠ Bihar.
From Morbi to Joshimath, disasters are nationwide.
But Bihar gets blamed while others escape scrutiny.
India needs better infra—and honest narratives.

For nearly 5 years, more than 1 million Tigrayans have been displaced after being ethnically cleansed from Western Tigray and Irob.
They’ve lived in makeshift camps - forgotten by the world, denied justice, and blocked from returning home.
Now, they’re rising up across Tigray. #ReturnTigrayansHome

Ethiopian Gov’t Spokesperson Mocks Tigray IDPs, Sparks Outrage
Government spokesperson Legesse Tulu is facing backlash after mocking Tigrayan IDPs demanding a return to their homes before the rainy season. In his social media , Legesse sarcastically claimed their protest was coordinated by Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki, whom he insultingly referred to as “a woman.”
The remarks have been condemned as disrespectful and hateful, especially toward displaced Tigrians who have suffered for nearly five years. Critics say Legesse’s comments reflect deep bias and undermine peace efforts, including the Pretoria Agreement.
Many are now calling for an apology and action from the federal government to protect IDPs’ rights and dignity.

Today is the Int’l Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict.
Nearly five years ago, Ethiopian & Eritrean forces launched a genocidal war on Tigray—marked by horrific human rights violations, including the systematic use of sexual violence against women & girls. 1/n
