The FDA is moving away from #AnimalTesting.
Here's why that matters.
For decades, animal testing has been the standard for checking whether a new drug is safe before it reaches humans. There is one major problem with this approach: more than 90% of drugs that pass animal studies still fail in human trials.
The FDA is now actively working to change this. In April 2026, the agency confirmed it has delivered on its first-year commitments under its 2025 #Roadmap to Reducing Animal Testing, and the alternatives it is turning to include computational modelling and simulation: exactly what our community works on every day.
These methods, which use computers to predict how a drug behaves in the human body, are increasingly being accepted in regulatory submissions. The FDA has even signalled it is willing to evaluate data from new computational approaches before they are fully validated, giving them the chance to start building a track record now.
This is a significant shift. And it is one the #VPH community has been working towards for years.

In this review, @WuXuekun et al. give an overview of recent advances in cellular models, microphysiological systems, computational approaches, and other non-animal methods (NAMs) driving the human-centric shift in drug development and biomedical research.
They also discuss how long-term adoption of NAMs depends on a workforce trained to use them—yet current training pipelines remain deeply rooted in animal-based paradigms. The National Institutes of Health’s human-based research initiative is noted as a step toward addressing this gap.
The review concludes with a NAM-focused vision for the future, where human-based methods will take the lead in drug development and animals will no longer be used in experimentation:
“The coming decade will mark a transitional period in which human -based NAMs gain a larger role in drug development while animal models contribute to a lesser extent and in more limited contexts. During this transition, animal studies are likely to move from being the default main evidentiary foundation to an intermediate role as calibrated reference systems that provide one evidence stream for benchmarking and refining predictive performance of NAM platforms, and eventually to a future state where they serve as ancillary information if needed.”
The paper, also by Matthew A. Wu, @james_y_zou, Nicole Kleinstreuer, and @Joseph_C_Wu of @StanfordMed, @StanfordCVI, @StanfordDeptMed, @StanfordDBDS, @GreenstoneBio, and @NIH, can be found in @ScienceMagazine: https://t.co/qx3nnHrM7f

In this recent perspective, @US_FDA leadership notes that "[t]he utility of NAMs extends well beyond safety assessment. Accumulating evidence shows they can improve the efficiency and predictive value of drug development itself."
@TracyBethHoeg, @BiotechKoz, @HalehSaber, and @DrMakaryFDA also discuss the importance of the FDA's collaboration with @NIH, which allows the agencies to connect technology development with real-world use and outcomes.

👏🏼The science is clear - animal experiments hurt humans and the animals subjected to these horrific, unscientific tests. We have so many reliable, humane research methods available, there’s no reason to continue this cruelty.

Animal testing is not incidental suffering. It is systemic, deliberate, and built into the process itself. Science has moved on.
We no longer need to rely on cruel animal testing.
What if biobanking were treated as shared public health infrastructure?
In a new perspective, Melissa V. Olson describes how they do it at The Johns Hopkins BioBank, a College of American Pathologists-accredited program that's part of the @HopkinsMedicine Genetic Resources Core Facility, now known as the Integrated Genomics Center.
Olson describes how embedding biobanking within an institutional service-center model creates financially stable, accountable, and scalable access to high‑quality human biospecimens and avoids reliance on unpredictable grants or subsidies.
This approach delivers:
🪨 Reliable, long‑term access to human samples
🪟 Cost transparency and responsible stewardship
🦺 Reduced risk compared to decentralized, lab‑based storage
🚀 Faster, more collaborative, research‑ready workflows
For scientists avoiding or shifting away from animal use, sustainable access to well‑curated human tissues makes human‑based research easier to initiate and sustain.

Fingers pinching its mouth open as a tube is pushed down its throat, this disturbing image shows how monkeys are sacrificed to check the safety of new weight-loss drugs.
The unprecedented footage supplied to The Mail on Sunday was secretly filmed by a lab worker at two UK testing plants who said he was horrified the 'immense distress' the animals endured.
The UK testing facilities he worked at are contracted by major pharmaceutical companies to conduct required safety tests using animals before they can progress to human clinical trials.
Both sites are Home Office regulated and operating completely within the law.
But the former lab worker said he wanted the footage and details of what happened to be released to ensure an informed public debate on the use of animal testing.
He described being 'haunted' by the shrieks and whimpers of animals during the trials, which could last for up to two years.
'My conscience wouldn't let me just quit and walk away,' he said.
'I felt if I was able to provide a window into this world that had been hidden from public view, perhaps it would change.'
Campaigners immediately called for the Government to 'accelerate' its pledge to phase out tests using animals, branding the footage 'shocking.'

Revisiting the TGN 1412 disaster to help prevent the next one 🔬
💊 "In 2006, a drug called TGN 1412 met every preclinical safety requirement. Clean in animal models. Clean in monkeys. Ninety minutes after six human volunteers received their first dose at a London hospital, they were fighting for their lives with their immune systems in overdrive."
🧫 What animal tests missed, human immune organoids captured. @ParallelBio’s human lymph node organoid platform reproduced the same dangerous immune response experienced by TGN 1412 trial participants.
👥 Species “similarity” doesn’t equal human predictivity, especially for complex immune effects. And species isn’t the only mismatch. The current pipeline often flattens human diversity into models that were never designed to represent it.
🐁 "Men are more likely to die from infectious diseases; women are more likely to develop autoimmune conditions, a divergence driven partly by sex hormones that directly regulate immune function. Yet preclinical testing still relies heavily on single-sex inbred mice, collapsing human diversity into a single genetic line."
“It’s ignoring facts ... It’s the reason medicine doesn’t work for everyone," says Parallel Bio co-founder, Robert DiFazio.
🔦 Human-based technologies like organoids offer a clearer window into how human biology actually responds across diverse donors, before failures become crises.
Congratulations to Parallel Bio and co-founders DiFazio and Juliana Hilliard on this excellent feature in @RandDWorld.

Plants eat this "dogpoop" to survive.
Scientists used to call this process "photosynthesis", but that was forgotten (somehow) after the global warming panic hit.
