The Executive Director of @HRNJUganda, Mr. @RobertSsempala opened his presentation by taking the participants on a memory lane of how #CCEDU, a once powerful platform for civic rights defenders & organizations collapsed as a result of the NGO Act. He gave reflections based on the theme “𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 & 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 - 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 & 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬”. He was more concerned on the over regulation of the media by citing a recent scenario where Pearl FM was temporarily closed & management of the station had to make trade-offs to operate again. In addition, he expressed his concerns about the regulatory framework around UCC & how the media practitioners have no avenue to table their grievances with the regulator. He further advocated for better compensation and pay of the journalists who go through thin and thick to cover stories that inform daily decisions of our lives.
