@kallenbergera @bstoltzy1 @nancy_jojo Very true! It is unfortunate that most people don't have a common sense filter. #Edld567
MT teacher code of ethics states: understands and diversityAND models the principles of citizenship in a democratic society. Wishing harm on others bc of opinions violates both #edld567
@LeanneMichaele Great point about racially motivated versus politically motivated #EDLD567
@ahles_joel @kberger00 @bstoltzy1 I just feel that is what is expected of our profession. If a doctor sees a person in need of assistance on the side will they help? Most likely. We don’t leave what we do at the office, we bring it with us in everything we do. It’s who we are. It’s why we do it. #EDLD567
@bstoltzy1 @ClaridgeHiller Excellent point! What would we teach our children to do in this situation? #EDLD567
@kberger00 I agree that Monica is culpable for her decision, but am not sure I would jump to termination. Saying insensitive things is different than inciting violence, and I believe in second chances, but agree with termination if this was recurring. #edld567
@kberger00 @bstoltzy1 I echo the feeling that we don't stop being teachers when we leave the building, but is that right? Devils advocate: if a cook leaves the restaurant, we don't expect him to make us meals, if a teacher leaves the school, why are their standards still there? #edld567
@kberger00 Kristina, I agree there are pros and cons, and unfortunately a slip-up like Ms. Williams' is a consequence of the con in social media that people feel safe to say whatever they want. #edld567
If in Ewing ISD, I'd acknowledge elephant in room during after-school meeting and remind staff that what they post can be seen even if only up for a short time. Remind them they represent school. Review policy. Don't wait though, meet quickly. #edld567
@LeanneMichaele @ClaridgeHiller That is a great point. We see things happen once and done which is never a good thing. I like a sign off yearly to make sure people are held accountable but also that they know expectations are clear. #EDLD567
@kallenbergera @bstoltzy1 @nancy_jojo I agree even in anger comments like that are very scary. As a professional in any career this is not ok! One of her roles at school is helping students through anger and frustration. Posting something like this shows she shouldn't be in that role. #edld567
@ClaridgeHiller Professional development and sharing policy with all staff members is critical so staff do not put themselves in these situations or if they choose to they already know the consequences. Great post! #edld567
@Timberteach We are always held to higher standards, much like student athletes and or professional athletes are too. When you serve public that’s what you are held to. We are in the public eye. #EDLD567
U11 #1. Implications in this case are a lack of awareness on ethical moral behavior on personal time. PD needs to remind researchers and staff of behavior outside the school and the dangers of misbehavior or conduct. Educators are role models every minute, every day. #EDLD567
U11#1 It is possible for educators to balance beliefs and morals. Any time you stand for betterment of humans you can’t go wrong. But demeaning negative language and action is against our ethical code as educators. #EDLD567
@mcgill678ms #EDLD567 I 100% agree. I see many of my colleagues with current students as 'friends' on social media. I do not personally believe this to be a good idea for many reasons. Policy must be written and teaching staff trained & updated.
@bstoltzy1 @hayleyjdonovan @nancy_jojo #EDLD567 I do not disagree about the timing of the decision. Due process is an absolutely and did not occur which is my issue with the decision.
@ClaridgeHiller @Timberteach #EDLD567 Agreed. It is easier said than done. The bigger point, and in particular to sharing all of the above, is to exercise caution above all. Know your audience, know yourself.
@Timberteach #EDLD567 I know that this is sometimes an unpopular view, but having well over a decade of experience as an educator, I've come to believe it is vital, even if unfair, that we hold ourselves & our actions inside/outside of school hours, to high standards.
