*Facts are indeed stubborn* . The secessionist one-clan enclave of #Somaliland (SL) has long supported #terrorist activities, including #AlShabab and #ISIS factions operating in the #Galgala mountains of northeastern #Somalia. Dr. Abdiweli Gaas, former Somali Prime Minister and President of Puntland, confirmed: 'It is true, and I will not lie that #Somaliland supports #AlShabab, and they support it very much.' Similarly, in his own words, as shown in the video below Mustafe Bacluul, the outgoing Director of Intelligence of SL admitted: 'Berbera, our main economic hub, has at least 200 people passing through to join #AlShabab in Galgala.'
The atrocities of SL are not limited to terrorism. In 2023, SL waged a brutal war of aggression on #Laascaanood under the leadership of war criminal #MuseBihi, indiscriminately shelling schools, hospitals, mosques, and homes for eight months. This campaign displaced nearly 300,000 people, killed thousands, and left tens of thousands wounded, including women, children, and the elderly.
SL’s latest aggressions, including attacks on the #SomaliRegion of #Ethiopia and the city of #Erigavo in #Sanaag, further expose its destabilizing role in the region. These calculated acts of violence, paired with its historical support for terrorism, paint a clear and concerning picture of SL’s intentions and the utter disdain it shows for peace and stability.
Silence in the face of these terrorist activities and atrocities is not neutrality—it is complicity. By failing to hold SL accountable, the international community risks legitimizing its actions and undermining the billions of dollars invested in global anti-terrorism efforts and the importance of the stability of the #HornAfrica. Praising SL effusively as peaceful and stable is not only disingenuous but perpetuates violence and terrorism is nothing short of #hypocrisy, #doubleStandards, and profoundly #Orwellian.
It is time for the international community to confront these undeniable facts, fulfill their moral obligations and fulfill their responsibilities to uphold international law , act decisively to prevent further destabilization and suffering in the region. Turning a blind eye to such atrocities and sponsoring of terrorist activities is not just a failure of leadership but acquiescence.
