@JessicaGaudet4 Good point, I think kids developing their own creativity and ability to think for themselves from a young age is an essential trait that informal sport can help develop. It can teach them to embrace uniqueness and learn confidence. #Lab2KIN11019
@Princes06650386 @KyleNakonechny Yes I do. Nowadays children are spending more time on technology while drinking sugary drinks or junk food which is why there is an obesity epidemic right now and it will continue to rise unless we educate people on getting children to do more informal activities #Lab2KIN11019
@KyleNakonechny @KIN110UofR No Kyle, I am in the same boat as you. My parents opened my eyes to a variety of diffferent sports. However, at the time when I was young I had no idea where I wanted to go in the future in terms of sport, so my parents guided me. #Lab2KIN11019
@SavageJayd I didn’t have a limit to screen time growing up but I feel like this generation is a lot different. We never had iPhones, iPads and all the other technology we have now. I feel like as kids we were always outside and being physically active. #Lab2KIN11019
Informal sport is important for children because it allows them to participate in physical activity without the pressures of competition, and expectations; while having fun. An example of this is playing a game of basketball at recess. @KIN110UofR #Lab2Kin11019
Informal sport can have positive and negative values. It allows children to develop their interaction while learning respect, cooperation and how to have fun. A negative value could be them developing aggression. An example could be leisurely tennis. #Lab2KIN11019
Now a days parents have to set a time limit on technology in order to get there kids playing in informal activities. Due to technology becoming more addictive to younger children my question to everyone is: did you have a screen time limit for technology growing up? #Lab2KIN11019
@hanuofr @JessicaGaudet4 I think that informal sport can lead to potential bullying. Kids can be excluded from games and then have a negative thought toward recess or informal sport later on. I think bullying and exclusion are two big problems amongst informal sport. #Lab2KIN11019
@hanuofr I agree that acknowledging mistakes is a good way to overcome mistakes in the future. I'm simply saying that in informal sports it's okay to let loose sometimes and make a mistake, it's what makes an informal sport like shinny fun #Lab2KIN11019
@JaredNoyes3 @OlijnykTherese @Leah76335419 I agree that it can prioritize individual performance, children can learn negative skills such as cheating, lying and stealing in trying to further their individual performance from informal sports. Again this is not always the case but it definitely can happen #Lab2KIN11019
#Lab2KIN11019 Kids taking part in informal sports & physical activity is important to their development as they learn skills which they can use/have for the rest of their life. For example, communicating is important in informal sports as when trying to start up a game at a
@KIN110UofR kids taking part in informal sport allows them the chance to express themselves freely with their peers/friends without the worry of messing up. I think it’s essential for development in social, mental, physical aspects, and building confidence. #Lab2KIN11019
@jeanniepost Hi Jeannie, you mentioned some great skills that children are able to learn through informal team sports. Have you thought about the individual skills children can learn through more individual informal sports? #Lab2KIN11019
I believe informal sports promote that playing well and having fun really are the most important things. The score of a pickup basketball game may not matter as much as a formal game. Which could promote more fun rather than competition. #Lab2Kin11019
@OlijnykTherese @Leah76335419 I agree about the positive skills, however are there also some negative skills that kids can learn from informal sport? #Lab2KIN11019
@jeanniepost In addition to some of those skills, children also learn how to interact with other kids (communication skills). In addition to that kids can also learn safety skills by themselves simply by testing their limits on the playground (falling and scraping knee/shin) #Lab2KIN11019
Informal sport is very important when it comes to a child. An example of this is recess or just playing in the backyard. It creates a foundation of independence that children need when they grow up that stops them from relying on older people to have fun.@KIN110UofR #lab2KIN11019
Individual oriented activity, or a more team oriented sport. From this kids have the opportunity to learn skills such as leadership, communication, independence, etc. #Lab2KIN11019
The value of informal sports such as shinny, is that kids are able to be more creative without having to worry about making a mistake. For example: mistake in game=consequences(coach, parents), mistake in shinny=nothing. Essentially you're able to have more fun #Lab2Kin11019
When children are involved in informal sports/ physical activity such as a game of soccer at recess; kids would have the opportunity learn for themselves skills like leadership and problem solving, without the impartation of adults. #Lab2KIN11019
