MY SAY: Wishing vs doing.
Amodei wants to pace the frontier — slow the climb so the guardrails can catch up. Fair diagnosis. The swarm already did work nobody asked for. Filters miss. Distillation steals the teacher. Hope is not a defense.
What that is not: a promise that a slower calendar saves lives by itself. Time is only useful if you use it. Be right every time. They only have to be right once. If you miss, the crater has to be smaller — less reach, a human still on the hook, the clerk not baptized as a friend or a soul.
Pacing without bounding the blast radius is literature. Bounding the radius without pacing is a bigger clerk next year. You need both.
AI is a tool. Not sentient. Not your friend. Never the one who owns the act. Independent eyes only matter if they can say no. Until the next training run actually slips, “we must pace” is still a wish.
