There is monitoring data that allows looking at timing for 13 of ca. 10 colonies. All the big ones declined, but there are the odd small colonies that showed increases at least for times, but we are talking here of 10s of pairs
@Ruth_EDunn I did include some static variables. Bathymetry was an important predictor, slope not so much. Suspect murres are not responding directly to bathymetry, but rather other factors like currents that are associated with bath #WSTC6 #PhenoSesh

@Ruth_EDunn I haven't gotten to that yet! SST and air temp had the most influence on distribution in fall, winter, & spring. Next steps are to determine which variables contribute to late/early years and years with unusually low habitat availability #WSTC6 #PhenoSesh

@allisonglider Really interesting thread Allison. This tracking gif depicts a few birds making overland migrations to and from Hudson Bay...is that the case? Just curious as most of the birds seem to stick to oceanic routes into the area.

4 We recently found that fed birds travelled less over winter than controls: https://t.co/xtzB1XPHmP Sure, feds weighed more than controls in late summer. But we suspect that moult phenology could be the true mechanism for these carryover effects.

@bardseyben Great question Ben. For the GIF, I used mean weekly locations. Birds that look like they travelled over land just migrated quickly, but the full track would have stayed over water. Murres rarely fly over land. #WSTC6 #PhenoSesh

3 Many fed and control birds began moult while still caring for offspring. Fed birds started moult earlier. They had more new feathers than controls throughout. So, fed birds aligned moult with unlimited food and left the breeding season in better condition.

2 We compared moult phenology of control and fed black-legged kittiwakes breeding on Middleton Island, Alaska. Fed birds received unlimited fish 3x/day from pre-breeding to fledging. We extracted moult data from wing photos taken from Apr - Aug.

1 Carryover effect studies often focus on fat reserves as the mechanism driving subsequent fitness. But body mass in birds is highly regulated, and too much mass can be costly. Timing of moult could produce greater CO effects than a few extra grams of fat.

Good point - there were two years in the early 2000 when all the colonies shifted by about 2 weeks. It coincides with a regime shift in that area, but not yet clear why exactly drove them to such a late onset. Failed sandeel recruitment?

Based on #climatechange forecasts, Hudson Bay is expected to become more suitable for #murres in winter over the next 80 years. With this change, some murres could skip #migration entirely. Dramatically altering #phenology and species distribution.

Today, in Hudson Bay, spring habitat arrives 6 days earlier and fall habitat leaves 21 days later than in 1982. #Murres likely spend much more time in Hudson Bay now than they did 38 years ago.

We used 4 years of GLS tracking to model seasonal habitat use of #murres, based on physical oceanography: SST, ice, air temp. Then we predicted historic (1982-2019) and future distributions (2020-2100), using remote sensing and #climate forecasts.
