The #HumanRights situation in #Morocco, incl. #WesternSahara, reflects a significant shift toward a #RightsBased approach. After acknowledging past systematic abuses through a #TransitionalJustice mechanism, 🇲🇦Morocco established independent watchdogs like the #HumanRightsCouncil (#CNDH), which publishes reports—even critical ones—on abuses.
CNDH chapters in #Laayoune (Moroccan #WesternSahara) & elsewhere actively monitor, criticize authorities when necessary, and ensure #DueProcess. For events like the #Rif protests, #CNDH investigated violence by both #Police & protesters and examined torture allegations. #SystematicAbuses no longer exist; isolated cases occur but are monitored by #CivilSociety & independent bodies.
Contrast this with 🇩🇿 #Algeria, where no independent monitoring mechanisms exist, and systemic abuses persist, as reported by @amnesty & @hrw.
Freedom of Expression and Assembly:
•Authorities suppress dissent by arresting #Activists, #Journalists & #HumanRightsDefenders.
•Laws criminalizing actions that “harm #NationalUnity” undermine #PoliticalActivism.
Crackdown on Civil Society:
•Independent groups like #LADDH dissolved to stifle #CivilSociety.
Press Freedom:
•Journalists face harassment, legal action & imprisonment, with media outlets critical of the government being shut down.
Treatment of Migrants:
•🇩🇿 expelled 20,000+ migrants (Jan–Aug 2023), exposing them to #Violence, #ArbitraryDetention & poor treatment.
Judicial Harassment:
•Dissenters like #ZakiHannache face arbitrary arrests for “spreading false info.”
Tindouf Camps (🇩🇿): Persistent Crisis
•Refugees unregistered due to 🇩🇿 refusal of a #UNHCR census.
•#FreedomOfMovement & #FreedomOfExpression heavily restricted; dissent punished.
