.@pressfuturist’s advice for getting into publishing is: create a personal development network. Utilise Twitter - 90% of the publishing people he knows are from here. Read articles they share, see what they think is important. Learn indirectly through them. #SYPSwitch #SYPConf18
If a job description says "must have X years of publishing experience", apply anyway and promote your transferable skills! Write an excellent cover letter and sell yourself on what you DO have.

@Olivia_Edwards1 "A massive barrier to your career is how you feel about your capabilities"... Publishing needs people from every background, with every kind of experience. Don't devalue what you can bring to the industry #SYPConf18 #SYPSwitch
.@Leilah_Makes talks about the kindness she experienced from others in the industry which enabled her to travel for interviews and to make the move to London. It’s important to pay it forward - even though these barriers should not exist #SYPSwitch #SYPConf18
Sometimes the biggest barriers can be psychological, look at the transferable skills in the job description - just because you've never worked in publishing doesn't mean you don't have the skills.
