Today marks ten years since the enforced disappearance of Shabir Baloch. For ten years, his wife Zarina Baloch and his sister Seema Baloch have been forced to live with a question no family should ever have to ask: Is Shabir alive, and where is he? Ten years of silence have turned every day into an agonising wait for truth.
Zarina has been denied the certainty of knowing whether she is still a wife waiting for her husband or a widow denied the right to mourn him. Seema has spent ten years searching for answers about her brother. Their lives have been suspended between hope and grief, while the state has failed to provide even the most basic information about Shabir’s fate and whereabouts.
Shabir’s disappearance is part of a wider pattern of enforced disappearances and collective punishment in Balochistan.
