Last night was 7 hours of insanity! For 7 hours straight, I captured over 800 images of #northernlights from here in Northcentral PA! This is a quick view of NY camera roll, 2 insane #substorms and incredible #colors! #pawx #auroraoverpa #wxtwitter

We did discuss a similar situation from an earlier #solarstorm when the By & Bz components flipped strongly. But in this case, AE is a much better index to use than even Hp30 because of the slow solar wind speed. When wind is around 400 km/s, #aurora from #substorms is possible!
Likely a #solarstorm side swipe to the west. Impact is enough to give us #aurora at high latitudes, but the AE index is only showing mild #substorms thus far. Currently the #solar wind speed is too slow to give us lasting shows at mid-latitudes. Only the dedicated should chase!
Do we feel the effect of the CME on 5 September (Bz ~-5 nT, but very slow solar wind), based on proton temperature that is much lower than expected? Does the earlier depression of proton temperature correspond to the 4 September CME? @TamithaSkov @erikapal @chrisoutofspace

#THEMIS observations confirmed (in 2016) magnetic reconnection in the #magnetotail triggers the onset of substorms.
#Substorms are the sudden violent eruptions of space weather that release solar energy trapped in the #Earth's #magneticfield.

One advantage of learning about #SpaceWeather at @UCLIRDR means going to the @RoyalAstroSoc for a field trip to learn about #substorms organised by @MSSLSpacePlasma and get a feel for the cutting edge academic research in the UK.
We have 7 posters at the @RoyalAstroSoc Storms and Substorms meeting today including @ASmith0005 @ijonnyrae @colforsyth @jasmine_ksandhu , Frankie and Michaela! #storms #substorms #spaceplasmas
The Eastern Hemisphere may be getting another shot for #aurora! The #solar wind field has turned southward & speed has increased! The #auroral electrojet (AE) index is showing values exceeding 500 (blue shaded part), which means #substorms & sporadic #aurora brightenings now!
Sort of. The description of the #aurora mechanism is oversimplified. On the nightside, Earth's magnetic tail reconfigures internally in multiple places (during #substorms) as well as what they show here during a big #solarstorm. Many things happen at once. It's a complex ballet! https://t.co/tey1y9pW0p

No. #Substorms reorganize the tail of Earth's magnetic shield, which acts like a slingshot & shoots particles at us. https://t.co/ZKb3fMSpWo
@TamithaSkov @GwentandMore @VirtualAstro Are these substorms caused by Hall currents perpendicular to Pedersen currents? 1/2
