@alanjiforVP Tom Delamere is definitely a corrupting influence on Sandy because he gives Sandy liquor every time he sees Sandy sad or depressed. As an alcoholic himself, Tom encourages Sandy to abuse alcohol to drink away issues (especially about being suspended from church) #TMOT13

#tmot16 makes it so easy to sympathize with ellis because of his unrequited love for clara. however, #tmot13 shows that ellis is still very much a racist, thus reminding the readers of the complexity of the characters.

#TMOT13 "Surely a people who made no complaints could not be very much oppressed" (76). A very interesting quote. The black people didn't complain bc a) some were brainwashed and unaware of their oppression (i.e. Mammy Jane) and b) feared being lynched.

#TMOT13 During this time period, Sandy being excommunicated from the church would have been a big deal as the church was often the place the community interacted at. Sandy being excommunicated essentially rejects him from his community.

I keep picturing Tom Delamere to look sinister like a prettier version of Scar from the lion king Bc in ch2 it said he was feline-like and he's such a jerk especially when on p79 he "laugh[s] until he cries" at Sandy getting kicked out of his church #TMOT13

#TMOT13 Sandy is portrayed as two people: He is a servant happy to serve during christening party. He is a liar who is involved in cakewalks, and goes against his Christian values- sent to spiritual Coventry (judgement). Sandy shows the diverse personalities and intent of man.

I still don't get how Sandy chose to perform in the cakewalk. Doesn't he know that the cakewalk was created to insult his race? It serves him right to be disciplined by his church for the act that he had done. #TMOT13

#TMOT13 cakewalk was a dancing contest where the best dancers would be awarded with a cake at the end of the night. At the time, this was very common for the negros to participate in. In the book, the cakewalk takes place among the negros who are being studied by some northerners

Why would blacks at the time risk their dignity by doing a cakewalk when it was obvious that the whites were just making fun of their race? Were they so desperate for food that a cake was what they could get? I don’t understand why they would condone this cruel show. #TMOT13

When Northern visitors came to the south, a cakewalk, or dancing competition between African Americans w/ cake as a prize, was held to give the illusion to the visitors that all negros were content w/ their life & position in society when in reality, not all were so happy #tmot13

“For the negro is not counted as a southerner, except to fix the basis of congressional representation”. Actually, negroes were even further dehumanized because in congressional representation, they were only counted as 3/5 of a person. #tmot13
