🐻 Understanding Communities for Better Conservation As part of the #WIIProjectSlothBear, socio-economic surveys were carried out in villages around Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Banaskantha district, North Gujarat. Building on the pilot-tested survey framework from the Mount Abu landscape, these assessments documented livelihood patterns, forest dependency, and community perceptions towards Sloth Bears. 📰🐻 Project Sloth Bear Featured in Dainik Bhaskar The ongoing efforts under #WIIProjectSlothBear were recently featured in Dainik Bhaskar (Jalore/Sanchore edition), highlighting scientific research and conservation activities focused on Sloth Bears in western India. The report highlights surveys being conducted in Sundha Mata Conservation Reserve, Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary (Rajasthan), and Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary (Gujarat) to better understand Sloth Bear ecology, habitat use, food resources, movement patterns, and population status. The article also features the use of DNA-based analysis of non-invasive samples, such as scat, to support population monitoring and improve our understanding of genetic diversity in Sloth Bear populations. In addition, it highlights the project's efforts to strengthen research on the human–bear interface and identify science-based approaches that promote coexistence in shared landscapes. The fieldwork for #WIIProjectSlothBear has now expanded into the ecologically significant landscape of Sundhamata Conservation Reserve. 🐻🌿 Situated within the southern Aravalli landscape, Sundhamata represents a complex interface of wildlife habitat and intense human use. Large parts of the landscape are heavily infested with Prosopis juliflora , an invasive species that is altering native vegetation structure and habitat quality. At the same time, the buffer regions experience high human activity, livestock movement, and intense browsing pressure, creating additional challenges for wildlife persistence and habitat recovery. Our ongoing surveys focus on generating baseline ecological information through extensive vegetation sampling, habitat assessment, scat collection for genetic analysis, and evaluation of human pressure across the landscape. Alongside ecological assessments, the project also aims to understand human–bear interactions and coexistence challenges from the human perspective through socio-economic surveys and community-level engagement. These efforts will help better understand Sloth Bear habitat use, landscape connectivity, conflict dynamics, and coexistence patterns in this rapidly changing ecosystem. The team is conducting the surveys in close coordination with the Range Forest Officer & staff, Jaswantpura, whose continuous support and field assistance have been invaluable in initiating the study.
