!! We also make provisions so that you can make a poster AND present in a way that's comfortable and accessible to you. Thank you Zahra for writing our access-centered poster guidelines! #DisabledinSTEM #ChronicallyAcademic #PhDisabled #DisInHigherEd #DisabledAcademic

Poster length limits are also short so good for ideas you wanna put out there with low spoon work
Once again doing the traditional start of term "are the rooms accessible for me" dance #ChronicallyAcademic
Does a job exist in environmental/water science that's akin to assistant professor (feat. research + mentoring) but *part-time* & paid proportionally (adequately for time/skill, possibly livable)? #DisabledInSTEM #PhDisabled #DisInHigherEd #DisabledAcademic #ChronicallyAcademic
Top tip for #NEISvoid / #chronicallyacademic community. Do not become disabled over time and, whatever you do, do not have a #dynamicdisability
Insurance companies 4 which you pay disability cover just can't seem to comprehend that becoming disabled is not necessarily an "event"
#painflare + #phd deadline looming is not a good combination. Just need a break 😭

This is all to say - writing on flights is a privilege; something many women, fat folks, disabled folks, POC, etc. can’t do because their right to take up space is policed or questioned. #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #DisabilityTwitter #chronicallyAcademic #academicmama
My semi-regular retweet of these resources, please share. I'd love comments, input, advice from people with different experiences to me.

I started writing up a thing with info on accessibility in academia based on my experiences & the ways I've had to educate myself. I hope it's helpful for anyone involved in teaching, research, event organising etc

Folks, I am having way too much fun here. Don't let me have all of the fun by myself.
What examples do you have of accommodations being granted without REALLY being granted?

Very grateful for @tom_dally89 having a writing session with me yesterday. Although my schedule is a little out of whack due to health #ChronicallyAcademic, I managed to write a good chunk yesterday and feeling better about completing my PhD next year. #phdlife 📡✈️🌦️

In all seriousness, disabled students should have the option of adding at least a certificate or something along those lines for all of the advocacy work they are forced to do.

If you consider yourself an ally to disabled students, find out about their health insurance. Advocate for plans that are inclusive, comprehensive, and affordable. Advocate for emergency funding for health needs. #HigherEd #DisInHigherEd #ChronicallyAcademic #AcademicTwitter
Graduate and undergraduate students who are disabled, chronically ill, and/or neurodivergent, this is a PAID opportunity to share your stories about universal design for learning. Check it out!

Are you a disabled, chronically ill or neurodivergent student in higher education? We're creating an open source UDL guide and want to center the stories of students who are impacted by inaccessibility and ableism. You'll be paid a $100 honorarium. 1/

Also, as @WeRepSTEM points out, DEI initiatives tend to completely ignore folks who are non-binary and disabled.
Diversity, but only if it makes white, able, cis-gender males comfortable.

A recent study finds many academic diversity & inclusion initiatives cater to white students and faculty, and not the students they were supposedly created to support:

@Therapists_C To show that disabled people are needed in both counselling as counsellors and academia as researchers. There is no diversity without disability and nothing about us without us. #phdchat #DisabilityTwitter #chronicallyacademic
Ummm, how to substantially improve your odds at winning at accommodations right here.
How many times have I thought, "I should have argued/mentioned X" after failing at accommodation requests? A lot.

@theADHDacademic @Nicole_Lee_Sch Im working on creating a template 4 my reasonable accommodation requests, so that regardless of how good or bad my symptoms are or how stressed I am, etc I can copy/paste my requests. It’s evolving over time as I try to use them. I would love to see a bunch of us winning at this
Good to see senior leadership making time to listen to the lived experience of disabled and neurodiverse staff. We need a wider conversation about changes needed to enable full participation of all staff. #chronicallyacademic @yotadimitriadi @RanjitaDhital @chron_ac
Message from our Vice-Chancellor @vandenoort, which acknowledges the University’s new Disability Confident Employer (Level 1 - Committed) status, but also the upcoming work to explore the lived experience of our disabled and neurodiverse colleagues: https://t.co/ctC94rosVf

The skills disabled folks are forced to develop to deal with ableism is ridiculous. It's a whole section on a CV. #DisInHigherEd #AcademicAbleism #ChronicallyAcademic #DisabilityTwitter #Disability
