Since mid-March 2025, a deeply alarming surge in violence, raids, mass arrests, arson attacks, and blatant racial discrimination has been unleashed against Black migrants and refugees in Libya. Reports from One Day Seyoum (ODS) and Refugees In Libya (RIL), based on interviews and on-the-ground information, paint a horrific picture of individuals targeted simply because of their skin color. This escalation has been fueled by the misinterpretation of a political statement and inflammatory rhetoric from Libyan government officials, creating a dangerous environment of hate speech and public aggression. Black migrants are being treated as criminals for merely existing, facing arbitrary arrests, detention in abusive centers rife with torture and sexual violence, forced evictions, and the burning of their belongings. They live in constant fear of attack and struggle to access basic necessities like food. The European Union, a significant partner and funder of the Libyan government in its efforts to prevent migrants from reaching Europe, has a crucial responsibility to act. Their financial support is inadvertently contributing to a system that enables these human rights abuses. This violence must stop NOW.
