An imprisoned Iranian Christian convert was beaten yesterday, resulting in a broken bone in her left hand, after protesting against worsening conditions inside the women’s ward of #Tehran’s #EvinPrison.
#GhazalMarzban, who was recently sentenced to over 9 years in prison on charges of “propaganda against the state” and “gathering and collusion against national security”, was protesting against overcrowding in the prison, after 50 new prisoners arrived.
The prison doctor diagnosed a fracture of her left hand following the beating and recommended that she be transferred to hospital, but at the time of writing she remains in prison, in severe pain.

In a harrowing first-hand account, Mahvash Sabet describes her arrival and torture at Tehran's notorious Evin prison following her 2008 arrest for being a Baha'i.
She recounts brutal beatings, verbal abuse, and the terror of blindfolded interrogations in Section 209, the "heart of hell" where political prisoners and prisoners of conscience are broken.
Despite the violence, Sabet writes that she found strength in the knowledge that she represented Iran's Baha'i community, and that her torturers ultimately failed to break her spirit.

Christian convert #HannahGholami, 36, has returned to #EvinPrison after 4 months' medical leave.
Hannah is serving a 2-year sentence on “national security” charges related to her involvement in a #house_church.
The official charges were: “forming” & “membership” of a “group or association with the aim of disrupting national security”.
Hannah began serving her sentence in November 2025, having been arrested in December 2023 and sentenced in July 2024, alongside 3 other #Christians: Daniel Mohammadi, 66, Afghan #refugee Kourosh Hosseini, 45, and another unnamed convert.

A Christian convert recently sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison has reportedly gone on #hunger_strike in #EvinPrison in protest.
#Ghazal_Marzban, a #Catholic whose husband has #Parkinsons disease, has been on hunger strike since last Monday, 25 May, according to HRANA, and her physical condition is said to have deteriorated.
Ghazal was re-arrested in January, days after the massacre of thousands of protesters, including at least 22 Christians.
She was sentenced last month to 9 years and 8 months in prison by notorious Revolutionary Court judge Iman Afshari, who was recently sanctioned by the EU and has been behind the harsh sentencing of many political prisoners, including #Christians.

An Iranian #Christian convert has been sentenced to 9 years and 8 months in prison on charges including “propaganda against the state” and “gathering and collusion against #Iran's national security”.
Ghazal, who spent two months in #EvinPrison in 2024 after being convicted of “propaganda against the state by chanting slogans”, was rearrested in January at her home in #Tehran.
Her #Bible and other Christian literature were confiscated, and she was then taken away to an unknown location, with no explanation given for her rearrest.
According to Article18’s sources, Ghazal was pressured during interrogations to admit that her #Bible and other Christian literature had been used for evangelical purposes, but Ghazal denied this, saying they had been for personal use only and that, as a Christian, she had the right to possess them.
Article18’s executive director, Mansour Borji, said that due to her husband’s #Parkinsons disease, Ghazal’s sentencing was in reality “a sentence for both of them”.

An Iranian Christian convert has been released from #EvinPrison after 2 years in detention on charges related to his religious activities.
Amir-Ali Minaei, 32, was released on Wednesday, 29 April, as part of an annual amnesty of prisoners.
He had been serving a sentence of 3 years and 7 months (later reduced to 2 years and 6 months because he did not appeal) since 29 April 2024, on charges of “propaganda activities against the regime through establishing a #house_church”.

کانون حقوق بشر ایران، یکشنبه ۲ فروردینماه ۱۴۰۵ – در روزهای اخیر گزارشهای متعددی از #زندان_اوین منتشر شده که نشان میدهد زندانیان، بهویژه #زندانیان_سیاسی، در شرایطی بحرانی و همراه با کمبود شدید امکانات پزشکی و درمانی نگهداری میشوند.
این در حالی است که با توجه به شرایط جنگی و خطرات احتمالی، انتظار میرفت با اجرای مصوبه ۲۱۱، زمینه آزادی یا کاهش جمعیت زندانها فراهم شود، اما این مصوبه در زندان اوین اجرا نشده و زندانیان همچنان در شرایطی پرخطر نگهداری میشوند.

استفاده از زندانیان به عنوان «سپر انسانی»، تعیین وثیقههای بسیار سنگین و نبود مقامات زندان و عدم پاسخگویی به خانوادهها
بر اساس گزارش رسیده به آموزشکده توانا، پس از موج اطلاعرسانی درباره شرایط نامناسب زندان اوین، برخی مشکلات اولیه از جمله قطع بودن آب گرم و کمبود دارو تا حدی برطرف شده و روز گذشته آب گرم و برق در دسترس زندانیان قرار گرفته است. همچنین به زندانیان اعلام شده که میتوانند نیازهای دارویی خود را مطرح کنند.
با این حال، منابع مطلع میگویند که مشکلات اساسی همچنان پابرجاست. از جمله مهمترین نگرانیها، نبود هیچ نهاد پاسخگو است؛ بهطوریکه خانوادهها نمیدانند برای پیگیری وضعیت عزیزان خود باید به کجا مراجعه کنند و به گفته این منابع، دادیار، دادستان یا مسئول مشخصی برای پاسخگویی در دسترس نیست.
این وضعیت باعث شده که بسیاری از خانوادهها در بلاتکلیفی کامل قرار بگیرند. همچنین گزارش شده که زندانیان عملاً در نبود مسئولان زندان رها شدهاند و در شرایطی نگهداری میشوند که برخی آن را «استفاده بهعنوان سپر انسانی» توصیف کردهاند.
در همین حال، روز گذشته از زندانیان پرسیده شده که چه کسانی در میان آنها واجد شرایط مرخصی هستند و اسامی برخی از زندانیان سیاسی ثبت شده است. با این وجود، هنوز مشخص نیست که آیا این روند به اعطای مرخصی واقعی منجر خواهد شد یا خیر.
از سوی دیگر، در زندان تهران بزرگ نیز گزارشها حاکی از افزایش فشارها بر بازداشتشدگان اخیر است. برای شماری از این افراد، وثیقههای بسیار سنگین (از حدود ۶ میلیارد تومان به بالا) تعیین شده تا بتوانند به مرخصی بروند، در حالی که بسیاری دیگر همچنان از این امکان محروم ماندهاند.
منابع مطلع تأکید میکنند که اگرچه اطلاعرسانیهای اخیر باعث بهبود نسبی برخی شرایط شده، اما بحران بیپاسخگویی، فشارهای قضایی و وضعیت نامشخص زندانیان همچنان ادامه دارد و با توجه به شرایط جنگی به زندانیان و خانوادههای آنها استرس فراوانی وارد میشود.
بر همگان است که خواستار آزادی فوری زندانیان، به خصوص زندانیان سیاسی و عقیدتی شوند.

The situation is deeply troubling. Immediate attention is required to ensure that the basic human rights of those detained are protected.
As international counsel to Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali (@Free_Djalali), we also urgently draw attention to his critical and time-sensitive case.
There is an urgent need to establish a safe evacuation corridor and to ensure that detainees have access to essential necessities such as food, water, electricity, and basic hygiene. No prisoner should be left without these most basic protections.
This situation cannot continue without intervention. The lives and wellbeing of those detained must be safeguarded.
We therefore call for a clear and coordinated plan by the relevant authorities and the international community to address this urgent humanitarian concern and to protect the lives and dignity of those imprisoned.
The treatment and protection of prisoners is not discretionary. It is a basic obligation under international humanitarian and human rights law. At this critical moment, the safety of all detainees must be ensured as a matter of urgency.
