There is a growing emphasis on enabling users to run their own @Ethereum clients. Beyond making Ethereum lean (#LightClient, purge history etc and @leanEthereum advocated by @VitalikButerin ) to technically enable this and lower operational costs, we should also provide incentives for users that go beyond just "Stake and Earn."
As an ERC author and EIP editor, my two gweis are that we should introduce a series of interface and indexing standards. These would allow clients to install extensions related to indexing specific smart contract events and function calls.
This system would create a triple-win scenario:
1. Developers or users working on pure front-end projects could simply point to a node running these specific extensions.
2. These extensions would then provide the indexed results to the developer, allowing for much faster calls and significantly improving the UI performance of the resulting apps.
3. This approach simultaneously strengthens decentralization by encouraging more users to run functional nodes.
I realized this because every time we want to develop something, we find that we need indexed data to improve efficiency. However, Subgraph itself has many limitations, and there aren't many people running it.
Furthermore, a previously famous indexing system called @reservoir0x couldn't sustain its operations either. The reality is that there is a wealth of data within these nodes that isn't being utilized effectively.
If we can solve this problem, these nodes will transform into data providers. This would allow everyone to easily build many different types of applications. For example:
1. We would no longer need to rely solely on Etherscan or @BlockscanHQ .
2. Users running their own nodes could obtain a high-performance, self-hosted version of an explorer similar to @etherscan .
