@robertkaplinsky The worst part for me is when textbooks have a "HOW WILL YOU USE THIS?" section for every single subtopic. Like, no, I'm not going to "use" rational functions to paint my house or whatever #pseudocontext they come up with.
But that doesn't mean they're not worth learning.
Interesting thread. I already knew I had a distaste for how many math textbooks shoehorn in as many "real-world" applications as they can (when they often end up just being #pseudocontext), but I never thought of this effect the WORDS "real world" have.
As a professor I avoid the phrase "in the real world" as much as possible. There's a number of reasons for this:
1. In general I think it undercuts the importance of the class and the material presented.
2. As an industry professor, such language suggests the teaching part of ...

@bretjturner @AlexBorstein The math problem underlying is nice, but the context (#pseudocontext ) does not contribute to the math. I understand the need to communicate the problem to students, but this kind of contrived situation is especially bad in print.

Contexts are great when they help us think about what makes sense. But inserting a context into a problem like this is more than unhelpful... it diminishes the field of mathematics.
