@MarkUdall @savingprivacy @Snowden @NSAGov @SenatorBurr @TheJusticeDept @Thomas_Drake1 5/6) So when @SenatorBurr says @FBI can do "all of this" after #Section215 expires, he's pointing to a specific, rogue legal theory that predates the PATRIOT Act. It has resulted in the government getting hundreds of billions of records illegally, and probably unconstitutionally.

@MarkUdall @savingprivacy @Snowden @NSAGov @SenatorBurr @TheJusticeDept @Thomas_Drake1 4/6) What @Thomas_Drake1 blew the whistle on was Stellarwind, which operated ~2001-2007. @Snowden blew the whistle on a similar set of surveillance after the government had hidden it away under lawless interpretations of statutes, like #Section215 and #Section702. Still illegal.

The Wyden/Daines "Safeguarding Americans' Private Records Act" was a real due process reform, unlike the House-passed #Section215 reauthorization bill. But it was never even allowed debate, much less a vote.
